Adirondack Loon Center Education-Outreach Intern teaching summer campers about loon ecology and behavior.

The Education and Outreach Internship offers an exciting opportunity for a college student to spend the summer with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation based in Saranac Lake, NY. This internship will provide excellent experience in creating and conducting natural history presentations based on loons, promoting environmental stewardship, and conducting fieldwork.

This internship is designed to provide a creative learning opportunity in the field of wildlife conservation. Under the supervision of our Education and Outreach Director, the intern will be exposed to a variety of experiences within the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation. The primary responsibility of this internship is to conduct outreach through educational programming at Adirondack regional summer camps. This includes developing content, presenting at the camps, assessing impact, and revising content to improve engagement. The intern will build a diverse skill set: outreach and tabling at events, engaging with visitors at the Adirondack Loon Center, performing fieldwork by monitoring loons at study lakes, and developing additional children’s programming.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational background in environmental education/interpretation, wildlife management, ecology, natural sciences, or a related field
  • Previous experience working in education, outdoor recreation, or a nature/visitor center
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, professionalism, and leadership
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Ability to paddle a kayak in varying weather conditions and sit for ~4 hours to observe loons
  • High level of organizational skills to effectively plan, teach, and administer the diverse demands of the job, and keep detailed records
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, creative, and willing to work with people of all ages
  • Valid driver’s license and personal transportation
  • Employment is contingent on passing a background check
  • A personal canoe or kayak, paddle, lifejacket, and paddling experience
  • Binoculars for loon monitoring with an appropriate magnification

Position Dates: May 28, 2024 – August 17, 2024

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week, generally Thursday-Monday, but days of week may vary

Compensation: $15.00/hour, potential academic credit, hands-on training, and the opportunity to work in an incredibly beautiful place!
