About the opportunity
We are seeking to appoint an Agricultural Systems Modeller in the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture which is part of the College of Sciences and Engineering.
The role involves leading or participating in research to model crop and livestock production systems. These research activities will assist the agricultural and food sectors in Tasmania in making complex decisions actionable, especially on-farm decisions related to climate change and carbon neutrality. The role will involve the teaching of modelling to undergraduates and postgraduates in relevant units.

What you’ll do:
- Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University and Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture in achieving strategic objectives and fulfilling operational responsibilities.
- Undertake high-quality research in agricultural systems modelling of national and increasingly of international standing, secure external competitive and other funding, publish research findings and contribute to the successful supervision of research higher degree students, to meet and regularly exceed the University’s research performance expectations for Level B/C.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University and locally and nationally with the discipline, relevant interdisciplinary domains, profession, industry and/or wider community.
- Participate in a national consortium to trial drought resilient farming practices and increasingly take the lead for the component to be delivered by the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture.
- Undertake scholarly undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching of a high quality.
What we’re looking for:
- A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field.
- A good record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved national recognition and made worthwhile contributions to the field of Agricultural Systems Modelling, demonstrated by a record of quality publications, presentations at conferences and preferably success in securing external competitive and other funding.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a range of agricultural models and other tools (e.g. APSIM, DairyMod, DayCent) preferably with livestock production systems (e.g. beef, sheep, dairy).
- Experience in University-level teaching and learning.
- A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally with the discipline, profession, industry (where relevant) and wider community.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and in teams.
- The demonstrated ability to conduct training and extension workshops with the agricultural community (e.g. farmers, business owners).
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B or C and depending on appointment will have a salary within the range of $108,285 to $148,446 plus 17% superannuation.
