Working at CQUniversity

Join CQUniversity as a University Solicitor within our Corporate Services Division and become an integral part of a dynamic and forward-thinking institution. At CQUniversity, we are committed to providing an inclusive and innovative learning environment, empowering our students to excel in their academic and professional journeys. As a leading institution in higher education, we take pride in fostering a collaborative and supportive community that values diversity and encourages continuous growth.

As a University Solicitor, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that CQUniversity meets its legal requirements and navigates complex legal and corporate matters with precision. You will provide high-level legal advice, contributing to the effective mitigation of legal risks. Your responsibilities will encompass offering timely, high-quality legal counsel on a diverse range of matters, including State and Federal legislation, regulatory frameworks, University policies, contractual agreements, property/leases, and litigation matters. Your proactive approach to identifying opportunities for enhancing business practices through legal advice will be crucial, as will your expertise in analysing, interpreting, and negotiating contractual and legal documentation.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of Queensland legislation and regulatory environments, with the ability to stay informed about changes to legislation at both the state and federal levels. Your role will require you to minimise the University’s exposure to legal issues through your professional advice and to represent the University in courts, tribunals, and commissions when necessary. As a leader in the University’s legal operations, you will engage with working parties and committees and contribute to the education of University staff on legal issues.

You may choose to work full-time or part-time (eg. 3 days per week), making for an environment that is conducive to work-life balance and providing you greater flexibility than the corporate industry.  Make the switch to the tertiary education sector and achieve the balance you have always wanted!  With great leave entitlements and flexible working arrangements, we take care of our staff and provide second-to-none benefits.

Be Rewarded

  • Generous carers, maternity and paternity leave
  • 17% superannuation (with the choice of joining an award-winning superfund)
  • Flexible and inclusive work / life balance
  • Fantastic staff professional / career development opportunities
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program

Position Requirements

  • Admission or eligible for admission as a Solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction, with at least 7 years post qualification experience
  • Proven legal practice experience and skills within the tertiary education industry, or other complex public or private organisation.
  • Experience in providing ethical, impartial, and strategic advice relating to complete legal and regulatory matters.
  • Current Queensland Law Society Practicing Certificate or the ability to obtain one.
