In Italy, UNHCR works with the Italian government, other organizations and refugees themselves to uphold the fundamental human rights of stateless persons and people forced to flee, and to improve laws and national systems so refugees and stateless persons stay safe, get documents, can go to school, work and exercise other rights. Through its staff and partners, UNHCR is engaged in activities aimed at ensuring full and equal enjoyment of rights by all persons of concern, addressing protection risks in an Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) sensitive manner, with a particular focus on persons with specific needs, such as unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). UNHCR’s protection delivery is based on a community-based protection approach, which aims at putting the people we serve at the center of all decisions affecting their lives. Based on this approach, UNHCR promotes active refugee participation in all aspects of its programme cycle, builds protection strategies and solutions in partnership with them and supports the community’s own goals, also through better communication with communities.
The Community-Based Protection Intern will support the Community-Based Unit in all relevant activities as carried out by UNHCR in Italy. S/he will have the opportunity to strengthen and deepen the knowledge acquired during University studies on asylum, refugee protection and related issues through their work experience in close coordination with Protection colleagues, including on-the-job training and coaching.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Community-Based Protection Associate, the Community-Based Protection Intern will perform the following tasks:
The Community-Based Protection Intern will support the Community-Based Unit in all relevant activities as carried out by UNHCR in Italy. S/he will have the opportunity to strengthen and deepen the knowledge acquired during University studies on asylum, refugee protection and related issues through their work experience in close coordination with Protection colleagues, including on-the-job training and coaching.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Community-Based Protection Associate, the Community-Based Protection Intern will perform the following tasks:
- Support the Community-Based Protection Unit with the management of individual cases of Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Stateless persons: provide technical guidance to the partner ARCI on asylum, access to rights and services for Persons with Specific Needs (PSN), complementary pathways; assist referring and follow-up cases amongst UNHCR staff and its implementing partners; register and systematize case information.
- Support monitoring the archive of available printed material (e.g., GBV and CwC materials) for dissemination/training/advocacy.
- Contribute to the follow-up and implementation of the Community-Based Protection Unit projects, especially the CwC-related ones.
- Update and develop content for websites, newsletters, and other communication products as needed and requested.
- Manage UNHCR Italy’s Telegram channel: developing communication strategies and producing digital content.
- Provide operational support to Community-Based Protection activities as per operational needs.
Minimum qualifications required ;
Essential:
Essential:
- University studies in Law (preferred option), Human Rights, Political Science, Social Science, Community Development/Social Work, or related areas
- Fluency in both English and Italian (primarily written)
- Computer literacy (MS Office and other IT tools, very appreciated)
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Good organizing skills and ability to work autonomously.
Eligibility:
- In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
- An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
