Job Description: |
Field and Greenhouse: Organizing, planning, and managing all aspects of field and greenhouse experiments, which encompass tasks such as experimental design, plot arrangement, maintenance, seed processing, and packaging, as well as data collection and record-keeping within the realm of vegetable production. Providing assistance and guidance to students engaged in their field trial projects. Laboratory: Coordinating inventory and records of laboratory equipment, supplies (including purchase and order requests to replenish depleted supplies); responsible for the organization and maintenance of laboratory spaces and equipment; maintaining laboratory equipment and implementing quality assurance and safety procedures; assisting in research activities when needed (BS I). In addition, independently developing experimental procedures, design, and implement research in the areas of horticulture with a focus on tropical/subtropical vegetables; training students in laboratory experiment setup, assisting in the composition of grant proposals, project reports, and publications (BS II). Extension: Actively participating extension activities including but not limited to, visiting growers, field samples collection, conducting survey, and coordinating workshops and field days. |
Salary: |
Biological Scientist I – starting $16.52 per hour, depending on background and experience. Biological Scientist II – starting $45,600 annually, depending on background and experience. |
Minimum Requirements: |
Biological Scientist I – Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field. Biological Scientist II – Master’s degree in biology or a related field with 1 year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree required. Valid driver’s license. |
Preferred Qualifications: | Fluent in both Spanish and English MS in horticulture/ plant breeding/ plant pathology, or a closely related area in plant or life science Rich experience in vegetable production, including planting, fertilization, pest management, harvest, and product processing and seed storage Experience using basic laboratory equipment Experience with photography and taking photos/videos both indoors and outside Should be able to work independently, plan, organize, coordinate work assignments and communicate effectively Willingness to handle/apply pesticides, if required
