Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Individuals will be required to complete a pre-employment and any potential post-accident drug test as these positions are deemed safety-sensitive. Regardless of Minnesota statute, marijuana and other drugs will disqualify individuals from initial and continued employment. 

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience in soil erosion, water quality best management practice installation, on-farm agricultural experience, land surveying, conservation applications on the landscape, water quality monitoring techniques and education delivery.

Nature of Work

Under general supervision of a Soil Conservation Technician or Soil Conservation Director, assists with conservation projects, surveying, construction layout and oversight, water quality monitoring, computer data-entry, education and outreach, soil health research and data collection.

Examples of Work

  • Assists with soil and water programs and projects
  • Assists with conservation construction layout and oversight
  • Performs soil and water sampling
  • Assists with stream and river monitoring and data collection
  • Operates hand tools like soil probe, grade rod, hammer, hatchet, shovel, tape measure, GPS unit
  • Operates a computer and other data collection equipment in the field
  • Answers general questions from the public regarding projects or programs
  • Performs related work and projects as directed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work
  • Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff and the public
  • Ability to use assigned hand tools
