Overview
Position Objective:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is looking to hire an organized, detail-oriented animal rights advocate to analyze and compile evidence gathered during field observations and to draft legal complaints and public education materials. This “behind-the-scenes” work plays a major role in PETA’s work, shining a spotlight on the plight of animals who are abused on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, in laboratories, in circuses, and in other cruel industries. Meticulous attention to detail and a systematic approach are required. Experience in court reporting, criminal law practice, police or humane investigative work, or animal welfare regulatory enforcement may be helpful.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
• Take ownership of and work multiple facets of field observations, including:
o Review and log field observers’ notes and identify and propose avenues of pursuing violations and other items of potential interest
o View, carefully listen to and transcribe recordings, and catalog incidents for use in complaints and/or publication
o Independently assess evidence for violations of laws and regulations and draft detailed complaints to various agencies
o Coordinate and lead internal and external meetings, including with public officials and humane agents, related to the public release of field observations
o Perform a variety of writing, research, and administrative tasks in preparation for the public release of field observations
• Initiate research and interpretation of a variety of animal-protection issues in order to further field observations
• Maintain strict confidentiality at all times
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Requirements
• Degree in a related field and a minimum of three years of relevant experience
• Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA campaigns
• Demonstrated ability to transcribe audio recordings and describe contents of video recordings accurately
• Proven meticulous attention to detail and excellent analytical and editing skills
• Proven ability to conduct in-depth legal and other research
• Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to make sound, independent judgments
• Proven excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle many issues simultaneously
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
• Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
• Willingness and ability to travel
• Must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid U.S. drivers’ license, a minimum of three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory driving record
• COVID-19 full vaccination and booster recommended
• Support for PETA’s philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA’s position on issues
• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
The hourly pay range for this position is $18.20 – $23.17 per hour. The ultimate hourly pay within this range that will be offered to a qualified candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and the cost of living in the area in which the candidate will live and work.
