Purpose

As part of the Preservation and Digital Stewardship team at University of Texas Libraries, the Digital Reformatting Coordinator oversees day-to-day digitization activities and is responsible for supervising student technicians, lab operations, and workflows to convert library collections to digital formats.

Responsibilities

  • Key Responsibility 1:  Recruit, hire, train, and supervise up to 8 student technicians in all activities of digitization and reformatting library materials, including materials preparation, image capture, creation and management of archival and derivative files, and quality control; ensure digital conversion of all library materials is accomplished following established standards and guidelines.
  • Key Responsibility 2: Scan, photograph, reformat, and process collection materials, especially those requiring special handling and/or processing, with a focus on book/paper collections.
  • Key Responsibility 3: Manage, track, and report on digital reformatting progress though scheduling student technicians and assigning work based on allocated resources, deadlines, and special requests.
  • Key Responsibility 4: Monitor, evaluate, and improve digital reformatting workflows and documentation in collaboration with supervisors and colleagues in the work unit.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Supervisory or leadership experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication skills (both written and verbal) with an aptitude for teaching information to non-experts.
  • Experience and confidence operating digitization hardware and software, cameras, and/or scanning equipment.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for learning new tools and technologies.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to follow complex procedures.
  • Ability to work independently to analyze problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment and regularly share knowledge and expertise with colleagues and student technicians.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize effectively, and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with a range of digital file formats and experience with image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced technical expertise in image capture, image quality control, scanning hardware and software, digital file formats, and compression schemes.
  • Knowledge of preservation issues in libraries, archives, or related cultural institutions.
  • Knowledge of standards and best practices for creating digital objects from a variety of paper-based original formats.
  • Knowledge of color calibration and color management systems.
  • Knowledge of methods, standards, and best practices for digitization of audio and audiovisual materials.
  • Knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices.

Salary Range

$45,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions. 
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.

  • Typical library conditions.
  • May be exposed to dust and mold.

Work Shift

Monday-Friday between 7am-6pm as arranged with supervisor. This position will require onsite work.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
