The position is to be filled as soon as possible with an initial contract duration of two years, with good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Bonn, Germany.

The Regional Directorate Eastern & Southern Africa / MENA currently comprises a total of 14 country programs, within the framework of which both humanitarian and development cooperation projects are implemented. Together with the Regional Director, you will ensure the alignment of a country portfolio along the technical and strategic guidelines of Welthungerhilfe (WHH). The responsibilities for the respective countries will be distributed in consultation with the Regional Director. In addition, you will be responsible for the technical management of Country Directors in the respective area of responsibility as well as the full representation of the Regional Director in case of absence.

Your responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Regional Director, further develop, implement and secure funding for WHH’s regional program portfolio in line with WHH’s global strategy and ensure relevant programs, sound partnerships and efficient and appropriate structures on the ground.
  • Analyze and assess key developments in the region, including in countries where WHH does not currently operate
  • Ensuring a sustainable funding base for country programs through strategic portfolio planning and re-financing of costs together with the country directors
  • Strategic assessment of co-financing plans in coordination with the respective Country Director
  • Representation of WHH at events, in relevant fora and networks as well as representation both in Germany and internationally/regionally
  • Support the Regional Directorate in the performance of leadership tasks vis-à-vis Country Directors in accordance with WHH leadership principles
  • Work closely with other WHH program, finance and administration, marketing, policy and innovation units
  • Promote and develop partnerships with external donors, partner organizations, research institutions, and other stakeholders to create synergies relevant to the work

Your profile

  • A college or university degree in a relevant subject area
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in international development cooperation and/or humanitarian aid
  • Regional work experience in East/South Africa and MENA countries are an asset
  • Strong skills in setting and implementing meaningful goals in own area of responsibility
  • Experience in (technical) leadership of staff / teams an asset
  • Strong analytical and systemic thinking as well as ability to solve operational problems when required
  • Strong negotiation skills and decision-making ability, even in difficult situations
  • Willingness to travel to project countries with a fragile context
  • Willingness and ability to work in an intercultural environment
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken, as well as good French language skills
