Unit Mission Statement | The Department of Theatre and Dance is committed to preserving, transmitting, and expanding our understanding of these disciplines within the larger context of a liberal arts education. A hallmark of the department’s mission is the active integration of scholarly and artistic work in both courses and productions. The disciplinary relationship between Theatre and Dance offers a unique environment in which to explore and study performance and production from a multi-disciplinary and collaborative perspective. Students are offered a course of study designed to develop creative potential, foster inventive thought, and contribute to an appreciation of humankind’s artistic, intellectual, and cultural heritage. The Department is committed, through its productions, to providing cultural resources for university and community audiences, including classical and contemporary works that challenge and integrate commercial theatre and dance. The disciplines of Theatre and Dance, because of their ever-evolving nature, are particularly well‑equipped to prepare students to be highly responsive in rapidly changing environments both within and outside of these disciplines. |
Position Summary | The Department of Theatre and Dance at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a two-year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre and Dance instructional position that will begin August 10, 2024. This full-time appointment comes with the possibility of ongoing renewals, and a framework for promotion. This appointment also includes a service component commensurate with rank. We seek an individual with expertise in Lighting for Theatre and Dance. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in Lighting Design, theatrical design, and other topics in technical theatre, and to design and implement lighting for departmental Main Stage productions. Some background or experience in sound design is welcome but not required. The teaching load is 3/3 with a course reduction each semester for mainstage production support. |
Required Qualifications | A Master’s degree is required in a field relevant to technical theatre and dance. |
Preferred Qualifications | An MFA is preferred at the time appointment begins August 10, 2024. Previous experience in technical theatre and lighting design, especially in a higher education environment, is preferred. Experience with ETC is preferred and with Yamaha consoles and equipment is welcome. Previous teaching experience is preferred. |
