Overview

WHO WE ARE

The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, we’ve grown to a staff of 100+ talented individuals dispersed across the country and around the world. At THL, how animals are treated in the food system is at the forefront of our everyday work. As such, many of our staff are vegan by personal choice, and all of our THL-hosted events offer fully vegan menus. We welcome all mission-aligned candidates to apply, no matter where you are in your journey to end the abuse of animals raised for food.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

THL’s US Campaigns team is focused on influencing companies across the country to do better for the animals in their supply chains through hard-hitting awareness campaigns that galvanize the public to demand much-needed change. We’re calling on major US food companies—from restaurants to supermarkets to consumer packaged goods—to put a stop to their worst abuses against chickens in the food system. Currently, THL’s US campaigns are focused on pressuring companies to report on their promised transitions to 100% cage-free systems for egg-laying hens in their supply chains.

THL is seeking two (2) Campaigns Specialists to join our US Campaigns team. As a Campaigns Specialist, you play an integral role in guiding THL’s campaigns and Corporate Engagement projects. You have a deep comprehension of our theory of change and our Corporate Engagement work—our targets, our strategies, and the tools we use to win. You are able to work autonomously, manage your priorities effectively, and make critical decisions for your projects with minimal oversight. You are not easily discouraged; when faced with a setback, you reflect on lessons learned, apply them, and try a new approach. You serve as a subject matter expert on THL’s campaign strategy and its tactics and are a resource for the rest of staff. This position reports directly to the US Campaigns Manager. Kindly be aware that The Humane League is currently undergoing a review of job titles. While the responsibilities of the role will remain unchanged, there is a possibility that the title itself may be subject to revision.

This is a full-time, remote position. This position provides the opportunity for optional domestic travel for annual staff retreats, and potentially travel to up to three major campaign events per year, such as visiting a target’s headquarters; this is equivalent to approximately 1-4 trips per year.

We are only able to consider applicants who reside in the United States and possess United States work authorization.

We will be holding a webinar on Wednesday, February 28th at 5:00pm PST/6:00pm MST/7:00pm CST/8:00pm EST for you to find out more about the role and ask any questions you may have. The webinar will be hosted by Allie Gunter, US Campaigns Manager and Jenny Davis-Boyd, Senior Campaigns Coordinator. If you’re interested, please register here. As it’s a webinar, you’ll only be able to see the presenter and not others watching. The webinar will be recorded and available on our website by February 29th.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on campaigns within the organization and with external groups such as corporations, media, outside vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary lead on assigned campaigns and Corporate Engagement projects—setting strategies, executing tactics, and managing the overall performance of projects within and across departments, given only general directives.
  • Execute high-stakes tactics, including but not limited to planning and coordinating extensive campaign events, such as weeks of action, physical and digital ads, mobile billboards, and more. This includes making high-level decisions for Corporate Engagement projects, with minimal oversight.
  • Regularly guide collaboration efforts on cross-departmental projects with Corporate Engagement, Organizing, Digital Products, Communications, and other teams. Work with colleagues to set campaign goals, strategize, prepare, and carry out various campaign-related projects.
  • Maintain a robust comprehension of THL’s theory of change and vision for campaign success, including how our Corporate Engagement work leads to achieving THL’s mission.
  • Collaborate with the Corporate Engagement team to make high-level decisions for the team, including how we allocate our resources and time across contending priorities, and how we spend our budget.
  • Conduct deep research into target companies, their leadership, ethos, branding, etc.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the latest campaign strategies and tactics and our internal priorities.
  • Research and implement solutions to overcome obstacles the Campaigns team faces in order to improve and advance our work.
  • Assist in the training of future Campaigns team members and provide guidance and support.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Experience: You have enough professional or non-professional experience with pressure campaign efforts (via animal protection campaigns, political campaigns, grassroots activism, environmental or climate activism, or other forms of activism) to demonstrate that you have a strong understanding and detailed knowledge of how to effectively drive systems transformation.
  • Communication: You have excellent written and verbal communication skills and are able to communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. You convey THL’s message in a clear and professional manner and adapt the tone and style of your communication to suit your audience.
  • Flexibility and tenacity: This position balances a wide variety of tasks and requires constant adaptation, creativity, and learning. Campaigns are often unpredictable; campaigners must be able to quickly adapt to the changing landscape in order to capitalize on new developments and information, while remaining highly motivated and driven.
  • Innovative problem-solving: Because each campaign pans out in a different manner, this position requires you to problem-solve quickly and creatively in order to maximize the likelihood of success. Innovative and outside-the-box thinking is crucial to keep companies guessing and evolve our tactics with the changing landscape of the food industry.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess most, if not all, of the following qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • Self-motivation: This is a highly independent and autonomous position. You have experience taking initiative in pursuing goals, setting and managing your own schedule, and making decisions to move work forward with minimal oversight.
  • Strategic and critical thinking: You take ownership of thinking critically about your campaigns and tactics. You thoughtfully vet the tactics that you pursue, running them through critical assessment, and evaluating the risks, benefits, costs, and goals to make sure that you are making strategic choices that are in the best interest of THL.
  • Collaboration: You actively contribute to creating a respectful, collaborative, and productive work environment. You possess the confidence and interpersonal skills needed to lead cross-departmental projects and work with all levels of staff. You seek out opportunities to partner with others and practice radical candor—giving and receiving feedback to ensure our processes, workflows, collaboration, and projects are effective.
  • Organization: You are able to manage multiple projects, campaigns, and deep research with the extensive use of platforms like Google Workspace, Slack, Salesforce, and Asana. You use time management and attention to detail to plan, prioritize, and complete your work.
  • Research: This position involves conducting thorough research into target companies. You are adept at using search engines and online resources to gather information, and you bring a sense of curiosity, creativity, and persistence to finding details that may be difficult to locate.

To be considered for this position, please submit an application here. This position will close on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024 at 1:00pm PST/2:00pm MST/3:00pm CST/4:00pm EST. Late applications will not be accepted; if you are experiencing technical issues, please contact [email protected] prior to the deadline. Please submit applications and all supporting documents in English.

The initial application review will happen after the application closing date above. Once your application has been reviewed, you will be notified via email with further details on the status of your application. If a candidate is moved forward, the interview process will be as follows:

  • Work Simulation Exercise (completed remotely)
  • First Interview (via video call)
  • Final Interview (via video call)
  • Reference Check

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this role is $67,130 – $82,048. At The Humane League, we believe in maintaining a fair and equitable work environment for all employees. As part of our commitment to transparency and equity, we recently implemented a job architecture framework, which levels all of our roles according to size and complexity, as well as a compensation step system, which allows us to account for an individual’s total years of related experience when determining their compensation. In addition, we have adopted a no negotiation policy for salaries. To determine a job’s level, we carefully consider a variety of factors, including a job’s size and complexity, required experience, knowledge, and/or skills, internal comparability, and market data. To determine final compensation, experience will be measured by considering prior work in jobs or activities that are related to the role at THL. These new practices are aligned with our organizational values and will help us ensure we maintain clear, consistent, transparent, and equitable HR processes.

Employees enjoy full medical coverage, optional dental and vision packages, a 401(k) retirement plan, pet care & Rx discount plans, working from home, up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave for eligible employees, paid holidays, flexible vacation time, professional development, and the supportive environment at The Humane League!
