The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine within the School of Medicine is seeking a research technician and transgenic mouse facility coordinator to manage a satellite mouse facility in a basic science laboratory to study the neurobiology of chronic pain. The responsibilities will include laboratory research using neurobiological and pharmacological approaches to support the development of new non-opioid pharmacotherapies and analgesic drugs for the chronic pain that develops after neurotrauma, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.



Job Summary

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.


Essential Functions 

Managing the satellite mouse facility and providing husbandry and care of laboratory animals with a commitment to animal welfare and well-being.

Must be able and willing to handle mice and lift and move many mouse cages in a day. 

Assisting with breeding, organizing inventory, genotyping, phenotyping and otherwise validating several transgenic mouse lines. 

Quickly addresses and resolves any animal health concerns. 

Performing surgical procedures in rodents, including models of post-operative and neuropathic pain. 

Rodent handling, euthanization, drug administration and behavioral analysis in rodents. 

Routine laboratory work including immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization of CNS tissue slices.


Physical Effort 

Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.

Additional details about Required Licensure/Certification Bachelors degree in biotechnology, animal science, neuroscience, biology, physiology, molecular biology, or biochemistry. Experience in maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies; rodent handling and behavioral analysis; brain or spinal cord surgery in rodents; immunohistochemistry of CNS tissue slices; in situ hybridization of CNS tissue slices; breeding, genotyping, inventory of transgenic colony including DNA purification, PCR cycling, and gel electrophoresis, is preferred.
