Driver / Messenger
The main purpose of the Driver’s responsibilities include safe, efficient and effective driver service to the Ambassador, embassy staff, and official visitors when required.
The successful candidate should be discreet, reliable, and courteous, with good customer service skills. Embassy drivers are responsible for ensuring that the embassy vehicles are clean, in good running condition and regularly maintained.
The Driver will work as a valued member of the small embassy team, and maintain a high standard of driving skills and punctuality to ensure the safety of passengers at all times.
Roles and responsibilities
- Work collaboratively and successfully with co-drivers and other colleagues in the embassy.
- Transport passengers and supplies, including letters and documents, safely, professionally, and punctually.
- Comply with local traffic legislation including respecting speed rules and traffic regulations.
- Ensure that vehicles are fuelled, cleaned and safely maintained.
- Dress smartly for work (a uniform will be provided by the embassy)
- Demonstrate flexibility to be available at short notice, as and when required to meet business needs.
- Assist in periodic fuel and kilometre check administration.
- Participate in learning and development opportunities.
- Perform additional duties to support embassy functions as and when required.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis or consular cases.
- Ability to speak and write in French.
- Valid driving license and good knowledge of key locations in Nouakchott.
- Previous driving experience, with a high standard of driving skills.
- Basic mechanic skills (for example, ability to change vehicle tyres)
- Able to work independently or within a small team.
- Ability to use your initiative to address problems and remain calm in stressful situations.
- Personal discipline, with a professional approach to duties.
- Strong customer focus and ability to deliver a quality service.
- Courtesy and consideration in dealing with staff and other visitors.
- Able to present a professional image of self and the Embassy.
- Security conscious.
- Language requirements: working knowledge of French
- Previous experience of driving for an embassy, international organisation, or Mauritanian officials and VIPs.
- Previous experience driving Armoured Vehicles and a Category C drivers license would be desirable, but training can be given.
- Some knowledge of English will be beneficial when interacting with visitors who do not speak French, but this is not essential.
- Knowledge of Hassaniya.
