We are seeking a Director of HR-SOM . The Director of HR-School of Medicine (SOM) is a critical member of the HR leadership team, who works to effectively execute human resources policies, practices, and programs across the SOM. This position regularly collaborates with the Sr. Director of HR SOM to ensure alignment and support of the school’s business operations, compliance with applicable human resources laws and regulations, and consistency with the human capital strategies and models of human resources best practices at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and Johns Hopkins Medicine (an enterprise including SOM and JHHS). This position serves in an advisory capacity for HR Business Partners across the clinical and non-clinical departments and divisions within the School of Medicine. These departments include approximately 7,500 employees who are directly engaged in academic research, medical education, finance and administrative support functions and the clinical practice of medicine. The Director works with SOM leadership, faculty representatives and administrative leaders to implement and maintain strong HR practices and processes that ensure a strong focus on employee retention, engagement, employee relations and compliance. The Director also contributes support and feedback toward best practice efforts across the University-wide employee and labor relations function.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work in partnership with the Sr. Director of HR to develop and oversee the implementation of HR programs, policies and processes across the SOM, including workforce planning, talent acquisition, onboarding, goal setting, employee and labor relations, total rewards, employee engagement, leadership assessments and succession planning.
  • Work with SOM and JHM leadership to facilitate the harmonization of polices for JHU staff and JHHS employees under the Johns Hopkins Medicine organizational structure.
  • Design, develop, and guide efforts to improve business performance to support the achievement of School of Medicine objectives through integrated HR strategic plans across assigned areas.
  • Work in partnership the Sr. Director and Central HR functional leaders to drive the development of strategies and programs that address the specific needs of business units across the SOM.
  • Work with the Sr. Director to ensure that business leaders across the SOM are strategically supported with a focus on results and outcomes of the business, understanding the organization’s strategy and goals, and translating those goals into actionable HR objectives in support of the business strategy.
  • Provide information, analysis and consulting with department leaders to make data-driven human capital decisions about their organizations; leverage HR and business metrics to analyze and identify staff issues, talent needs, and trends.
  • Provide leadership and daily operational support to the Assistant HR Directors and HR teams engaged in the HR work for SOM departments.
  • Collaborate with the Sr. Director to manage the flow of information regarding new initiatives, programs and processes between Central HR and the SOM Assistant HR Directors and HR teams.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to Administrators to develop, implement and adjust protocols and plans of action to meet changing business and talent needs.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for management and staff across the SOM, with regard to addressing complex employee relations issues and performance improvement concerns.
  • Work with internal support resources on the SOM Employee Relations team to manage high volume, complex employee relations cases in concert with institutional partners to include General Counsel, the Office of Institutional Equity, ADA Compliance Officer, Occupational Health Services for Fit for Duty assessments, For Cause drug tests and diversion cases, the risk office for compliance hotline reports, and the Risk Assessment Team regarding workplace violence concerns. Partner with JHHS, as needed, to provide assessments, solicit input on employee relations cases, and provide sound advice on complicated cases.
  • Identify proactive employee relations interventions and initiatives to strengthen communication, collaboration and to build open relationships with staff and faculty.
  • Monitor employee experience reporting and report out on trends to HR leadership and appropriate School leadership.
  • Provide training, coaching and collaboration with business leaders across the SOM, to build understanding and support in key HR areas, including: employee development, teambuilding, performance management and talent planning; assist leaders with development plans for teams and employees.
  • Work with Sr. Director of HR and SOM leaders to support Diversity & Inclusion efforts through implementation of enhanced programs and targeted solutions.
  • Perform all related duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of progressively responsible Human Resources management experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a healthcare and/or academic environment is preferred.
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.

  • Advanced consulting and negotiation skills providing appropriate counsel, advice and work in partnership with management and staff on human resources matters as well as to facilitate and negotiate conflict resolution.

  • Demonstrates flexibility and manages change in ways that result in productive performance. Must be able to work effectively and independently in an environment with multiple competing priorities.

  • Requires exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong leadership presence and emotional maturity.
  • Must be able to effectively interact with leaders, faculty and staff at all levels of the institution.
  • Thorough understanding of human resources principles and practices, including employment law, and EEO compliance.
  • Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information discreetly and professionally.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
