Position Title Controller
FLSA Exempt
Primary Responsibilities St. Lawrence University invites applications for a Controller position. This is full time, 12-month, administrative position.
Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance and Administration, the Controller works closely with, and under the direction of the Vice President of Finance and Administration. The Controller is responsible for supervision of the day-to-day financial operations of the University including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, fixed asset management, cash management and payroll. The Controller responsibilities further address the preparation of the University’s financial statements, preparation of reports for internal and external constituencies, assure the use of general accepted accounting principles, and compliance with federal, state, local and College policies and procedures, and assists with the development and implementation of the annual budget.
Hybrid Work Statement
This position is based on our campus in Canton, N.Y., and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with some work-from-home flexibility.
Primary Responsibilities
The Controller directs and controls all financial activity covering the receipt, expenditure and safe keeping of the funds and assets by performing the following duties personally or through direct reports.
Directly supervise the following positions:
1) Director of Student Financial Services responsible for operation of Student Financial Services Office which currently has a staff of 4.
2) Senior Staff Accountant responsible for significant aspects of SLU’s accounting and external reporting process.  Researches, interprets, and applies accounting principles to complete daily, monthly, and yearly accounting tasks to support the Business Office in producing accurate and complete financial reports. 
3) Accounts Payable Supervisor responsible for accounts payable and general accounting functions of the Business Office to ensure that the university’s resources are expended in accordance with appropriate guidelines and financial activity is recorded in an accurate and timely manner which currently has a staff of 3.
4) Payroll Manager primarily responsible for payroll processing for all employees (exempt, hourly, and students), employee tax records, union dues processing, W2 annual processing.

  • Interpret policies and procedures. Writes and implements clear and informative procedures to ensure that the policies and procedures are followed.
  • Ensure that expenditures of all economic resources are performed in accordance with rules, regulations, and other mandates of the University’s Board of Trustees, the State University of New York, and the United States Government.
  • Prepares financial reports which summarize financial activity and financial position in areas of revenue, expenditures, and net assets based on past, present and expected operations.
  • Serve as custodian and ensures the safeguard of all University-owned assets, and develops, implements, and controls the college cash management operations. Ensures the continuous proper receipt, investment and other disposition of cash and other liquid assets.
  • Develops and implements procedures for the perpetual maintenance of fixed assets including periodic physical inventory counts of fixed assets and directs determination of depreciation rates to apply to fixed assets.
  • Advise management on desirable operational adjustments due to federal, state, local codes, and regulations.
  • Arranges for and serves as the University’s liaison for external and federal audits of the college’s official records, general ledger, financial statements, and accounts.
  • Prepares reports required by regulatory agencies and executive management.
  • Provides management with timely reviews of the organization’s financial progress of its various programs and activities.
  • Ensure the integrity and security of the University’s financial ERP systems and data and, in concert with the technology staff, implement related upgrades and modifications.
  • Assistance in the preparation of the University’s annual budget.
  • Oversees and monitors expenditures to assure compliance within the approved budget allocations.
  • Perform job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in finance
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a managerial level position with supervisory responsibility for a complex financial operation.
  • Through knowledge of integrated financial systems and related automated systems applications
  • Strong supervisory and team management experience in a customer-oriented environment
  • Ability to listen, clearly, effectively, and decisively communicate verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a Controller or a position of similar responsibility
  • Experience in a college environment operating under FASB or GASB standards
  • Certified Public Accountant
Salary $125,000 – $160,000. Actual salary will be determined by education, experience, unique skills and other factors permitted by law.
