The Taylor Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia is looking to hire a Lab and Research Technician 1 to assist in ecological and evolutionary genetics research. We seek an enthusiastic individual who works well with others and has a willingness to learn and take on new challenges. Motivated individuals will also have the opportunity to participate in supervised, independent research projects. Current projects in the lab include the genetics of extinction and colonization in plant populations, and genomic analysis of genetic conflict. Work in the lab incorporates field sampling and laboratory experimentation with the plant genus Silene, population genetics and training in the UVA Biology genomics core. The technician will assist with ongoing research projects as well as day-to-day lab management.
Job Description
- DNA and RNA extractions, performing phenotyping assays, data management, and assisting with field collections.
- Maintenance of plants in the greenhouse, collation of seed and tissue databases.
- Ordering materials and supplies
- Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.
- Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports. Assist with literature reviews.
- Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Order lab supplies and maintain inventory.
- Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
- Keep informed of new lab techniques.
- Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
- May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results. May provide logistical support to the study.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
This full-time position will remain open until filled.
This is a restricted position contingent on continued funding. This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility for a one-year renewal.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor’s degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Biology or similar field, experience with research (independent or supervised research preferred; course-based research minimum).
Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor’s degree will be considered in lieu of experience. Experience with laboratory genetics work preferred. Evidence of written and verbal scientific communication skills preferred.
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
