The Department of Psychology (http://psy.ucsd.edu /) consistently ranks among the top experimental psychology programs in the country. Currently there are 32 faculty, 5 research faculty, 30 staff and 80 graduate students.

Under the general direction of the Student Affairs Manager, this position is responsible for all aspects of administration and management of the Psychology department’s graduate program which serves 80 graduate students and 32 faculty.

Responsibilities include: Academic Advising; Program Planning and Implementation; Curriculum Planning and Implementation; Financial Support; Graduate Admissions, Outreach and Recruitment. Provide recommendations for reaching short and long-term goals and objectives for the program. Additionally, this position is responsible for departmental temporary instructional academic personnel and human resources.

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students and faculty. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

  • Proven experience in academic counseling of university students, and strong familiarity with student development in higher education. Sufficient background to evaluate academic data, analyze academic records, and make analytical decisions. Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

  • Working knowledge of information technology systems and demonstrated ability to use computer software systems for word processing, database manipulation, electronic mail and spreadsheet software.

  • Understanding of University rules and regulations. Knowledge of regulations relating to graduate students, course scheduling, and student employment.

  • Ability to successfully interact with students and faculty, and clearly explain requirements and procedures.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.

  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Knowledge of general education requirements, educational organization at university levels, and subject curriculum, to ensure effective implementation of educational material.

  • Interpersonal skills. Strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, humor, patience and flexibility, working with a variety of people at all levels. Ability to handle sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Strong ability to analyze complex data and develop recommendations and reports.

  • Ability to initiate, plan, develop, implement, manage and evaluate multiple programmatic activities independently and complete work in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Strong ability to anticipate problems, identify and analyze options, and implement corrective actions. Demonstrated skill in problem solving, conflict resolution and crisis situation management.

  • Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread correspondence and narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally, or in writing, one’s position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.

  • Ability organize and thoroughly complete workload under pressing deadlines with frequent interruptions.

  • Knowledge of basic math and accounting principles. Ability to gather, monitor and interpret statistical data.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.

    Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 – $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

    Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 – $42.10

    Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
