Position Title: Botany Technician AmeriCorps Member – 480 or 680 Hour

Position Summary:

The Supervisor’s Office, Payette National Forest (PNF) is recruiting two 480- or 680-hour Botany/Ecology AmeriCorps Members to work as a part of the PNF Botany Crew for the 2024 field season. This position is from April/May to August/September 2024, depending on interns’ availability. The work schedule is Monday-Thursday (4, 10-hour days) and requires frequent overnight travel (camping). Government housing may be provided.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Independently and as a part of a crew, complete multiple forms of floristic-based surveying on the Payette National Forest. The duties (100%) for this position include but are not limited to, driving and hiking into remote areas, surveying for rare plant occurrences, monitoring known rare plant occurrences, monitoring Research Natural Areas, collecting/managing data based on multiple protocols, and assisting with the drafting of survey reports. The position requires camping out 1-4 nights a week most of the summer.

  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings for multiple days at a time

Desired Qualifications:

  • Interest in a career in botany and/or ecology with an emphasis on vegetation management
  • Experience in basic GPS navigation
  • Completion of coursework in the natural sciences

Duty Location:

Duties are performed out of Krassel Ranger District – McCall, Idaho. Government housing may be provided.

Terms of Employment:

AmeriCorps members will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting April/May through August/September 2024. The members must complete a minimum of 480 or 680 service hours (depending on which length the member is available for) by the end of their term. The members will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits:

$8,500 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and a $2,626.27 education award upon completion of the 680 hours of service. This position will include a gear stipend of $194.12. Government housing or a housing fund may be provided. The members will receive training in CPR/First Aid & defensive driving.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
