This internship aims to offer students undergoing graduate or post-graduate studies and recent graduates a meaningful work experience by supplementing their learning through a practical and on-the-job training approach. In doing so, the intern’s knowledge is supplemented through a practical learning experience while IUCN derives some level of advantage from the young professional’s services as well as the possibility of gaining new perspectives from the intern.
This internship supports the Membership and communications functions of the Regional Director’s Office (RDO), towards IUCN’s overall mission of sharing and promoting the use of science-driven knowledge and tools for nature conservation and sustainable use in the Asia region. The intern’s key responsibilities cover:
Scope – Institutional Membership management and communications for region-wide external stakeholder engagement.
Function: i) Membership management support, ii) communications support through IUCN Asia’s social media accounts, website, newsletter and other platforms.
Key focus areas: Regional Members and partners engagement, policy influence and external communications
Duties and target outputs include:
  • To assist in Membership engagement, such as through drafting of letters and emails, preparing for meetings involving Members, attending and taking notes at meetings involving Members.
  • Meeting arrangement, meeting notes, draft emails and letters addressed to Members
  • To assist in coordinating Members’ participation in the Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) as well as assist in planning and coordinating various RCF events in which Members are involved.
  • Invitation letters, updated list of participants, Forum material.
  • To prepare draft communication materials including news updates, feature stories, social media posts and other publications.
  • A steady flow of information from the official platforms handled by IUCN Asia
  • To support with the quality assurance and evaluation of the communications materials produced by IUCN Asia.
  • Fact-checking draft web articles, searching for relevant data/reports on the Internet, producing a regular summary of IUCN Asia’s communications performance.
Guidance And Mentoring:
The selected candidate will undergo a general orientation training on IUCN’s:
  • • Asia regional programme and strategy;
  • • institutional functions of the regional Secretariat;
  • • policies and standards for stakeholder engagement, including for Members; and,
  • • communications strategy, style guide, branding and quality-assurance checks.
In performing the assigned duties, the intern will have the opportunity to interact with key units and teams at the Regional Office, throughout the region, and with Headquarters. They will gain hands-on experience engaging with various stakeholders, including IUCN Members, through both online and offline communications. The intern will receive constructive feedback on their performance from line managers.
Please Note: The above TOR contains the main responsibilities and duties of this position. However, in an ever-evolving organisation such as IUCN, staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular TOR. Where any task becomes a regular part of staff member’s responsibilities, the TOR should be changed in consultation between the manager, the staff member and the HR Unit. Any one of the three may initiate the consultation
Requirements:
  • Currently registered in an academic institution, either as undergraduate student (has completed at least three school years of Bachelor’s programme) or as post-graduate student (Masters’ programme)
  • Completed academic courses related to international relations, political science or sustainable development
  • Practical experience in the use of communication channels, methods and tools including through social media and other online platforms
