Offer Description
At the Department of Biological Sciences , there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within deep sea microbiology. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years. The successful candidate will be part of the research group Deep Sea Biology which is associated with the Centre for Deep Sea Research (CDeepSea) . CDeepSea is financed by the Trond Mohn Research Foundation (TMF) . The position will be funded by the University of Bergen.
About the project:
CDeepSea and the Deep Sea Biology research group have a strong focus on the hydrothermal systems along the Arctic-mid Ocean Ridges (AMOR). The unique geochemical and geophysical conditions in deep-sea hydrothermal vents support a similar unique diversity of (micro)biological life. For instance, recent investigations of microbial communities from vents have illuminated previously dark areas of the Tree of Life, revealed unique molecular adaptations of microorganisms to extreme environmental conditions and supported the discovery of biomolecules of industrial relevance. The successful candidate will focus on advancing our knowledge on the diversity, physiology, evolution, interactions and adaptations of microorganisms in deep sea hydrothermal vents. Hydrothermal vents located at AMOR will be the primary target for the investigations.
Work tasks
- Perform sampling and preparation of samples from deep-sea hydrothermal vents.
- Apply phylogenomics to establish the taxonomic and evolutionary relationships of microbial lineages in hydrothermal vents.
- Perform comparative genomics to predict physiology, to identify the genetic basis of environmental adaptations and reveal interspecies interactions of hydrothermal vent microorganisms.
- Apply different microscopy techniques to study microbe-microbe and microbe-mineral interactions. Relevant microscopy techniques include, but are not limited to, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Skills/Qualifications
- Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within microbiology or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- Documented experience with phylogenomics and comparative genomics including the use of diverse bioinformatics platforms for analysis and visualization of the data, is a requirement.
- Documented experience with the use of FISH and SEM microscopy is a requirement.
- Experience with sampling and preparation of samples from hydrothermal vents is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
- Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
- A good command of the Norwegian language is an advantage.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

If the appointee lacks teaching experience, or other relevant qualifications, the employment period may be increased to 3 years and 6 months. Teaching and other duties will in such cases be added to the position. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.
Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager.
