Position: Environmental Educator (Part-Time)

Position Summary: The Environmental Educator supports the development and implementation of all FRNC’s environmental education programs for all ages. This position acts as a co-teacher/educator within the following programs/classes: Forest Preschool (ages 3.5 to 5.5 years), afterschool programs (grades K through 8), elementary school field trips, birthday parties, and summer camp programs. Must be able to work on Saturdays.

Primary Duties:

Education and Programs (85%)

  • Co-teach in FRNC’s quality educational programs, including those for preschool, elementary, middle and high school-aged students.
  • Create and lead outreach programs for FRNC’s Nature Access Fund affiliates.
  • Create and design curriculum for FRNC’s public programs with other members of the education team.
  • Provide input for environmental education curriculum, school workshops, and summer camp programs.
  • Collaborate with the Education Director and staff in the development of new, innovative program offerings.
  • Act as a group leader during FRNC summer camp sessions.
  • Provide instruction and entertainment at birthday parties and engage with families.
  • Lead school study tours using Nature Center curriculum that meets requirements set by the New York State Common Core.

Visitor Center and Site (10%)

  • Assist with animal caretaker duties as needed.
  • Help with administrative responsibilities related to the center’s operations including answering telephones and disseminating information, promoting FRNC’s mission and answering questions about local natural areas, and natural history.
  • Ensure overall cleanliness and safety of the classroom. Assist with daily cleaning, organization and tidiness of both indoor and outdoor classroom spaces.

Fundraising (5%)

  • Support all aspects of FRNC’s fundraising including mass mailings and events.
  • Work at special events on weekends as necessary.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with all customers and donors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or have a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, education, ecology, or related field.
  • Teaching experience in a school, nature or science center, camp, or similar informal education-based organization.
  • Proven experience leading groups and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Exceptional talent at engaging all grade levels.
  • Knowledge of flora and fauna of the region, gardening, birds, seasonal changes, marine biology, and wildlife preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and computer skills.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.  
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and stand and/or walk for long periods on trails.   
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
