Job Description
DTU Aqua welcomes applications for a research assistant in the Section for Oceans and Arctic. In this temporary position, you will play a dual role: as an engineer to support marine scientists and oceanographers by maintaining our current equipment and also pioneering new observation technologies. Concurrently, the position will enable you to embrace the role of a data scientist, creating automated methods for perception, mapping, and prediction on our data tailored to specific research initiatives. It is crucial that the selected individual can rapidly integrate into our team and advance our current projects, as well as develop a career path within the institute based on their competences.
Responsibilities and qualifications
- Innovate and develop new technologies, platforms, systems, and software to expand the ocean observation potential of the institute.
- Collaborate in research projects and teaching within the observation technology research area.
- Be committed to developing their career path towards a PhD and assist in obtaining funding for this purpose.
- Engage in a multidisciplinary setting, liaising with technicians, engineers, students and specialist researchers.
- Take specialist responsibility for the development and maintenance of some of the in-house platforms.
- Demonstrate proficiency in computer vision approaches. Experience in mapping, 3D reconstruction and segmentation are considered an advantage.
As a formal qualification, you must have a master’s degree (or equivalent) in mechanical, electronics, or mechatronics.
We also desire
- Demonstrated research background, inclusive of thesis or articles published on pertinent subjects (autonomous robotics, acoustic and/or optical data perception).
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, and C++ programming dialects (knowledge in other languages will be valued).
- Articulate communication capabilities in both spoken and written English; Danish proficiency is an advantage.
- Marine fieldwork experience with deployed platforms is an advantage.

The Section for Oceans and Arctic covers a wide research spectrum from oceanography, population ecology, observation technology and the Arctic. The research into oceanography integrates biological, physical and chemical parameters’ interactions in the ocean, ranging from individual plankton to regional seas. We focus on understanding the key processes that govern the structure and function of pelagic food webs, as well as climate and ecosystem interactions. The research in population ecology establishes how processes affecting individuals shape populations and ecosystems.
