About the position

Faculty of Education and Arts, Nord University (Levanger, Norway) invites applications for a position as a PhD research fellow in sport sciences: Monitoring throwing load, shoulder injuries and shoulder kinematics and kinetics in experienced handball players. The PhD position is for a period of three years, with the opportunity for a fourth year. In the latter case, 25 percent of the work will be teaching and other relevant duties at the Department of Sports Sciences and Physical Education at Nord University.

The place of work for the position is Campus Levanger, but applicants should also expect to participate in activities outside the campus.

The successful candidate will join a project in which monitoring throwing load during handball training and competition is measured with IMUs and kinematics and kinetics will be measured and related to possible shoulder pain and injuries in experience handball players. The candidate is expected to work with monitoring of throwing load during handball training and competition and to further develop a monitoring system based upon IMUs and machine learning. Furthermore, to conduct 3D analysis of different types of handball throws to investigate eventual changes over time in relation to shoulder pain. Lastly, the candidate should be able to examine effects of adjusting the throwing load upon shoulder pain during handball training and competition.

Qualification requirements

  • The PhD research fellow should have a master’s degree in sports sciences, human movement sciences, biomechanics or a closely related field.
  • The research fellow is expected to have documented strong competence with monitoring of training load in overarm throwing. Knowledge, and experience in 3D analysis. Mathematical modelling, and programming skills, and an affiliation with handball will be considered an advantage when candidates are ranked.
  • Quality of the master’s thesis (excellent grade, equivalent of grade B or better on the ECTS grading system)
  • The PhD research fellow must enrol in the PhD programme professional praxis at Nord University , and must meet the formal admission requirements for admission into the PhD programme. An application for enrolment should first be submitted after an appointment is made and the supervisor(s) will help with this procedure. The candidate must be enrolled as a PhD student within 3 months from the start of the employment.

In addition to the required educational background, the following criteria will be evaluated:

  • Competence and grades on completed course work
  • Publications (if any)
  • Research and teaching experience

The candidate must be diligent and display the ability to work independently, supplemented with regular guidance, and is expected to carry out high-quality research and to publish the results in international conferences, and journals. It is the aim of the project to interact extensively with different regional and elite athletes, and the candidate should have excellent collaboration skills. The candidate should be proficient in written and spoken English. The PhD studies includes a compulsory 3-6 months visit abroad as part of the data collection and part of the research group.

The PhD candidate will be a part of the research group “learning and development of skills and performance in sports”, which is an interdisciplinary research group at the department of Sports Sciences and Physical Education.

The annual salary for doctoral researchers (code 1017) is set at wage level 54, NOK 532 200,- in the Norwegian State Salary Scale.
