The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer who is looking for technically inspiring work on cutting-edge projects, to join our growing Building Engineering Team in Edinburgh. We are looking for a passionate engineer with excellent design and technical skills who enjoys working collaboratively with local and national teams on a variety of project scales and typologies, in Edinburgh and across the UK

Current group focus areas include public sector, industry, and arts and culture. We are seeking to grow our business in commercial and mixed-use developments, with a specific focus on repurpose and refurbishment, and a general focus on zero-carbon buildings, and our new hire would be key to reinforcing and developing our capabilities in these areas. The diversity of workload and strength of client links has meant strong growth over the last year and a need for new team members to join our creative team. Recent and current projects include the UK’s first Net Zero prison, the V&A Museum in Dundee, retrofit feasibility studies for a number of listed buildings, and a large commercial office development in London’s Southbank with Make Architects.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

The successful candidate will work with senior engineers, technician teams and graduate engineers to deliver excellence on projects across all stages from inception to completion. The role will be closely linked with the architectural and engineering design of a large variety of new and existing building developments, working in close collaboration with local and national architectural practices and developers in Edinburgh and the UK.

Projects will include the inception, calculation, modelling and design of mechanical engineering systems from concept to tender phase, construction, hand over and post-completion evaluation. This is an exciting opportunity to take a steering role in the sustainable outcome on your projects, working closely with the architect and other team members in the development of the building form to align with design principles and energy and sustainability strategies.

You will be responsible for supervising junior staff to deliver mechanical design solutions that encompass the latest design thinking on low energy design, natural ventilation, sustainability and zero carbon. You will coordinate the design analysis and working with the team to optimise mechanical systems for operational energy and/or embodied carbon. You will also be involved in the designing of mechanical and public health systems including HVAC (Heating, Cooling and Ventilation) and domestic water and drainage systems, producing design documentation including models, drawings, reports and specifications.

Requirements

  • A background and a good understanding of the design of mechanical building services.
  • BSc qualified in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering.
  • A willingness to adapt and develop to solve analytical challenges relating to energy usage, temperatures and other relevant engineering parameters.
  • Ideally you will have experience of thermal modelling (Part L / TM 54 etc) and be capable of producing building energy models using one of the widely used software (i.e. IES, TAS, Energy Plus, Design Builder).
  • Ideally you will have knowledge of using Revit or 3D design and coordination software.
