Job Summary: The Elevator Repair Apprentice is a five-year voluntary, apprenticeship program to become a state licensed Certified Elevator Technician through a Federal Bureau of Apprentice and Training approved program consisting of on-the-job learning and course instruction.

Additional Department Summary: Must be able to be on call, be accessible by phone when on call and report to work within one hour of being called.

Required Minimum Qualifications:  High school diploma and GED and one (1) year of elevator experience; OR high school diploma and GED and two (2) years of electrical or electronic experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Must follow all UA policies and procedures and meet regular attendance requirements. Must follow all instructions and perform all job duties as assigned. Must work shift work and overtime as scheduled, sometimes with short or no notice. Closely observes and adheres to all safety rules and regulations as listed on product and equipment labels and as directed by management. Leaves work site clean and orderly. Ensures that all tools and equipment are cleaned and materials are secured. Must accomplish the essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner. Performs other job related duties as assigned.
All work shall be performed by using the proper and applicable guides and manuals and then logged as work is being completed on the proper equipment guides, logbooks, PM repair logs, on the job training logs, classwork logs and timesheets.
Tasks performed also require all associated administrative work such as time and attendance, workorder processing, ordering and receiving proper parts, and communications with required vendors and manufacturers, as well as all other related trades and departments.
Work must be completed while following all UA and UA Elevator Shop policies and procedures. Parts that have been ordered and received must be the proper parts and properly installed and adjusted. After task completion, the work site, equipment, and tools must be left clean and orderly. Tools must also be inventoried and secured.
All work must be completed while adhering to all industry and manufacturer safety standards and all safety standards directed by management.
Apprentices must attend and complete all classroom training and testing required under the apprenticeship program. Classes are up to 9 hours a week. Mandatory related instructional classes will be completed after work hours. NOTE: Apprentices will not be paid for hours spent on apprenticeship program classes or study.

Skills and Knowledge: Must also have a working knowledge of the use of multimeters and oscilloscopes.

Preferred Qualifications: Electrical or electronic schools or training is preferred. Preferred experience includes troubleshooting and repairs on AC/DC motors and motor control circuits; relay and/or solid state/ microprocessor control circuits; hydraulic systems and valves; and mechanical systems in general.
