OVERVIEW

The Research Foundation for the State University of New York at Plattsburgh (RF-SUNY) seeks qualified candidates for the position of Aquatics Scientist/Limnologist with The Lake Champlain Research Institute at SUNY Plattsburgh. The position will serve as a Project Coordinator for a study titled Deep Lake Limnology in Lake Champlain: The Role of Climate Change and Storm Events on Lake Vertical Structure. This is a full time, 12-month position, with the Research Foundation for SUNY, a private, nonprofit corporation. This position is Monday through Friday with paid holidays off and a desirable vacation package. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Core responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate/manage the Lake Champlain Deep Lake Limnology Study.
  • Develop and implement study methods and quality assurance protocols.
  • Preparation of field equipment, boat up-keep, and boat operations on Lake Champlain
  • Coordinate and participate in field data collection, to include limnological methods/plankton sampling, deployment of data bouys, and boat operation.
  • Taxonomy/Identification of plankton samples.
  • Manage/create database, handling of large data sets from field buoys, data set preparation, statistical interpretation, and analysis of key findings, and preparation of manuscripts for publication.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Serve on external committee when assigned/appointed.
  • Assist in supervision and management of undergraduate and graduate interns.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Assist in LCRI planning and support field and laboratory work for other research and monitoring projects as part of the Lake Champlain Research Institute team.

Required Education/Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in the sciences, with a focus on aquatic biology or limnology and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience. Strong M.S. candidates will be considered.
    • Must have experience with limnological field sampling techniques.
    • Evidence of taxonomic ability to identify freshwater plankton, including zooplankton and phytoplankton.
    • Experience with R, analysis of community level data including multivariate techniques, and ability to handle large data sets from remote buoys.
    • Experience with project coordination/supervision in aquatic systems.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Prefer prior training/experience with boat operation and/or outdoor safety training and working with groups in a field/remote setting. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Salary:

$48,000 – $55,000 with a comprehensive benefits package
