About us:
The British Embassy in Rome is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are now looking for a Driver to provide a high standard of transport and logistics to three UK Ambassadors in Rome – Quirinale, Holy See and UN Agencies – VIPs and other staff as operational needs require.
Core duties include driving, office and computer-based tasks as well as providing administrative assistance to the Embassy. Out of region travel is a key part of this role requiring occasional overnight stay.
The role encompasses:
General driving duties:
- Undertake all driving responsibilities issued by the Transport Manager, including delivery and collection of passengers and diplomatic bags, mail and documents as well as any ad-hoc driving requirements.
- Plan and research routes to destination to ensure fast and effective journey, using available technology.
- Complete journey record sheets including miles covered and petrol purchases.
- As a customer facing role, wearing the assigned uniform and keeping it in impeccable condition.
Care of vehicles:
- Keep the vehicles clean and serviced.
- Ensure the vehicles are always in order and clean.
- Conduct regular checks of tyre pressure, hydraulic fluid, oil, battery level and fuel.
- Identify any defects as early as possible and keep any potential risk to a minimum level.
- Ensure vehicle maintenance, servicing, and insurance renewal as necessary.
Office and administrative duties:
- Prepare all paperwork, invoices and overtime sheets for Transport Manager within the deadlines.
- As part of the performance management process, define annual business and development objectives.
- Contribute to logistics and delivery of high-level visits, including driving schedules etc.
- Contribute and actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives outside of own job for the wider network’s good.

Our ideal candidate will have:
- Valid EU driving licence;
- Proven minimum 2 years driving experience;
- Knowledge of roads and travel routes throughout the city of Rome with ability to use relevant technology, e.g. Sat nav;
- Good communication skills and ability to manage internal and external relationships with a variety of stakeholders including senior officers;
- Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team;
- Strong time management skills;
- Well-developed sense of safety; presentable appearance; service and customer focus approach;
- Minimum CEFR C1 level/equivalent in Italian and in English, both oral and written.
- Good IT skills with knowledge of the full MS Office package.

This is a full-time, temporary position (6-months duration with possible extension to 12 months), graded S1 according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is € 2,469.00 with an additional payment of € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year (pro-rata), with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.
Working hours are 40 per week Monday-Friday, between 0800-2000. Some work outside of standard working hours including weekends may be required and are compensated with overtime payment or time off in lieu.
All staff are enrolled in the Italian state social security and pension schemes, with flexibility to pay into the employee’s private pension scheme if chosen.
The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a probationary period of 4 months.
All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.
Staff recruited locally by British diplomatic missions in Italy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
