Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience
-
Three years of related laboratory operations
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-
Knowledge of computers and cloud computing environments
-
Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment
-
Excellent oral and written communication skills
-
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
-
Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships

Ability to bend and/or stoop for long periods

Ability to lift and/or move moderate to heavy-weight objects
Preferred Education and Experience:
-
Master’s degree in chemistry or related field
-
Five years of related experience in laboratory operations
-
Knowledge and ability to handle chemicals in a safe manner
-
Experience developing safety management plans
-
Class “C” vehicle operator’s license
Responsibilities:
-
Laboratory Logistics and Operations: Work with program staff to maintain inventory records and prepare the annual order for all expendables for organic chemistry laboratories. Schedule and manage laboratory assistants in handling and preparation of chemicals, solvents, and unknowns for lab experiments, collection, processing, and proper disposal of chemical waste. Supervise set-up of laboratory equipment for appropriate experiments. Direct and supervise operations involving all aspects of chemical storage, safety labeling, and inventory control. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures. Conduct process evaluations and implement improvements to minimize costs and promote efficient use of time. Monitor need for maintenance of laboratory facilities and request appropriate handling of needs.

Supervision and Training: Interview, hire, and train student workers each semester. Train student workers and teaching assistants in proper laboratory safety, all laboratory operations, and enforce safe working procedures. Assist with the administration of laboratories with TA training and coordination. Assist in the development and update of instructional materials for teaching laboratories.

Laboratory Instrumentation and Equipment: Recommend new and replacement instrumentation. Evaluate the merits of various instruments, issue orders for the instrument, and oversee the acquisition and installation of the equipment. Develop procedures for student use of all instrumentation; oversee checks of correct functioning of all equipment scheduled for use; troubleshoot malfunctions and schedule repair by others if necessary.

Laboratory Administration: Participate in laboratory supervision duties for each large laboratory course. Assist in the preparation of teaching materials and pre-laboratory presentations. Coordinates and oversees the day-to-day operations both in the physical laboratory/stockroom spaces and in the digital/online spaces. Manages instrumentation used in instructional laboratories. Prepare regular performance evaluations for teaching assistants; recommend pay raises and/or performance awards.

Department Outreach: Assists with outreach programs that are held in the laboratory classrooms including the department Open House and summer programs and workshops. Prepares lab rooms and assists with set-up for use of these rooms for department outreach.

Special Instructional Projects: Assist in the development and testing of new experiments and curricula. Purchase new chemicals, apparatus, and supplies as needed to implement new experiments. Evaluate and recommend experimental modifications for hazardous waste minimization. Assist in the development/updating of instructional materials. Transport placarded hazardous materials and perform other duties as assigned.
