Applications are invited for the above post within the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham, to develop weather sensors and an artificial intelligence model for forecasting local solar radiation to obtain accurate PV output performance.

The successful candidate will demonstrate that they meet the Role Profile Criteria both in their application and at interview.

Applicants should hold a PhD or be about to complete a PhD in solar energy engineering, computer science, mathematics, image processing, or a related quantitative field. 

Programming skills in Python and familiarity with data science and data visualisation libraries are essential. Any experience in developing neural network, regression, and computer visualisation models should be highlighted in your application. Experience in researching PV applications, the ability to use test facilities for solar performance and weather data measurement, and the ability to undertake image capture and analysis are also essential.

The primary function of this role is to conduct research into the development of intra-hour solar forecasting algorithms in support of the DEZNS-funded project ‘Ground-Based Array Network with AI for Enhanced Solar Forecasting and Decarbonised Grid Management’. You will be responsible for developing and installing six weather arrays and using them for solar and weather data capture. Subsequently, you will develop a cloud-based solar measurement and modelling platform to support multiple data sources and intensive prediction algorithms.

You will also be expected to disseminate your research widely, support other post-graduate researchers, and develop new research collaborations and proposals.

This full-time role (36.25 hours) is available on a fixed term contract until 31st March 2025. Arrangements for job share may be considered.
