1099 Environmental Educators

Fern Hollow Nature Center seeks energetic, motivated individuals to join our environmental education team by teaching our hands-on curriculum to students ages 2 through adult.  Programs include, but are not limited to, school field trips, children’s programs, family programs, adult programs, summer camps, and hikes.

With flexible schedules and a variety of topics and settings, these positions are ideal for individuals who work well as independent educators as well as part of a cohesive team. Applicants should have a love for nature and a willingness to share their knowledge with our constituents and help them learn, explore, and discover our natural world.  

Applicants will need to work well in classroom settings and have the ability to work in outdoor classroom settings where they may need to hike moderately, keep the attention of a wide variety of educational groups, carry equipment to and from sites, and work in a variety of weather conditions.

Employment Classification: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Environmental Education Team
Salary: $15 hourly

Hours: on an as-needed basis  

*New environmental educators are required to attend paid staff training upon hire. 

Job Description
Fern Hollow is looking for environmental educators to assist with its adult, family, and children’s programs, homeschool programs, school field trips, and summer camp programs. The environmental educator ensures a fun, adventure-filled, and safe experience that creates positive memories for budding environmental stewards. Environmental educators will:

• Assist environmental educators with school and informal programs for the    community at Fern Hollow and offsite.
• Organize and teach Fern Hollow’s informal programs
• Safely lead or assist groups of up to 20 participants on hikes in the meadow.
• Mentor volunteers when needed during programs.
• Maintenance of teaching sites and materials.
• Help maintain grounds, outdoor classroom, and garden.
• Set up and organize materials according to lesson plans
• Supervise and guide children at all times
• Other tasks as assigned by the Education Department
• Ensure safety during all activities and excursions, including group hikes and watershed programs.
• Adhere to and help implement Fern Hollow’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols

Requirements

• Ability to lead and teach environmental-based programming to a range of ages/ skill levels
• Experience working with children
• Bachelor’s or higher degree in a relevant field (a combination of education and pertinent experience may be considered)
• A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (some programming is offsite)
• Basic computer skills
• Dependable, reliable, and prompt with a strong love for the outdoors, children, and nature
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends and evenings
• First Aid, CPR, and clearances/ background checks are required (may be completed after being hired).
• Willingness to work on new projects
• Able to lift 50lbs
