Anticipated employment is May-September (exact start and end dates TBD)
Location: Natural Resources Building- Olympia, WA.
Salary:
Sophomore and below: $17.00/hr.
Junior: $18.00/hr.
Senior: $19.00/hr.
Graduate Students: up to $22.00/hr.
1-year Graduate program $20.00/hr.
2-year Graduate program $21.00/hr.
Higher $22.00/hr.
*Housing stipend of up to $1000/month may be available.

The fire season is quickly approaching! The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking one paid intern to work directly with our Plans and Information Section analysts and scientists in the capacity of Wildfire Meteorologist Intern. We are seeking candidates interested in pursuing a career in fire meteorology, particularly as it relates to fire weather, fuels and fire danger, smoke management, and/or fire operations support. You can expect to learn how to brief fire aviators, contribute to state-wide fire danger ratings, and plan a research project into an area of personal interest!
The DNR Wildland Fire Management Division (WFMD) is the state’s largest on-call fire department with over 1,500 permanent and seasonal employees engaged in fire suppression across 13 million acres of private and state forest lands. Within the WFMD, the Plans and Information section is responsible for fire weather, fire danger, intelligence gathering, GIS, and training. We frequently collaborate with the forest and fire scientists in the Forest Resilience Division, as well as public health and air quality experts at the Department of Health and Department of Ecology. This position will report to the DNR Wildland Fire Meteorologist, but will be exposed to everything the agency has to offer!
Responsibilities:
[Fire Meteorology/Climate] Gain knowledge in operational fire weather forecasting
[Fuels/Fire Danger] Gain knowledge in fire regulations and the application of fire danger ratings
Research and project work
Site visits, field surveys, and formal training
