Classification Title:

Lecturer

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA LEVIN COLLEGE OF LAW welcomes applications from candidates interested in teaching and directing the Gender Justice Clinic (GJC). The successful candidate joins a dedicated clinical faculty within the Virgil D. Hawkins Civil Clinics at UF Law. The GJC is a multidisciplinary one-semester clinic that offers students a range of opportunities to become involved in the law, legislation, and litigation surrounding the rights of LGBTQIA+ persons in Florida. GJC is one of only two state court live client clinics at UF Law and the only one that dedicates all enrolled students to client representation. GJC boasts the largest caseload, keeping students on their toes and giving them ample opportunity to practice trauma-responsive interviewing skills, document drafting, witness preparation, and a day in court. Students provide individual representation to clients throughout the State of Florida in state name change proceedings and help clients navigate changes to identification documents with various state and federal agencies. GJC also tackles issues of first impression, including a client’s request to seal a name change file, even though there is no such exception in the state sunshine public records statutes. The GJC is poised to continue this work and evolve under the direction of the right candidate.

A successful candidate must have at least three years of litigation experience and preferably clinical teaching experience. Work and/or familiarity with LGBTQAI+ legal issues is required. The applicant must be a member of the Florida Bar or willing to become a member within one year of being hired. The clinician will train and supervise 8-10 certified and non-certified legal interns/students in Fall and Spring terms each year and manage the clients/caseload during the summer months and term breaks. The clinician will also work closely with legal/community entities that support LGBTQIA+ human rights around the State.

A successful candidate will be appointed as a non-tenure-track Legal Skills Lecturer, participating fully in Levin College of Law governance and committee work. Alter three years of successful teaching and service, Legal Skills Lecturers are eligible for promotion and five-year, presumptively renewable contracts. Legal Skills Lecturers do not have scholarship responsibilities. Still, they are encouraged to participate in the scholarly life of the law school and are provided with professional development funds to produce scholarship if they choose.
