Registered Nurse I

The Student Health Care Center at The University of Florida within the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine (CHFM) is seeking several Registered Nurses (RN-I). The RN-Is will serve as the Student Health Care Center (SHCC) nurse, providing patient care in the various Primary Care teams. The incumbent will provide treatments and procedures, administer medications, screen and counsel patients, and collect and document vital signs, visual acuity, and Point-of-Care testing as directed by providers. Furthermore, the RN I will provide independent care to patients using nursing guidelines, practice protocols, standing orders, policies, & procedures, and other clinical duties as assigned.

Direct Patient Care:

• Perform assessment of patients and document in the EMR, including chief complaint, vital signs, and supporting medical information.
• Provides treatment procedures and administers medications as directed under standing orders and by providers.
• Documents pertinent information in the patient’s health record, Epic.
• Monitors patient response to treatments.
• Triage patients by telephone and in person, ensuring their health problem is appropriately managed promptly.
• Provides care using SHCC Nursing guidelines, Standing Orders, policies, and procedures.
• Provide nursing coverage as needed to clinics within SHCC.
• Performs nurse visits for walk-in patients, including assessments, medical care, and education under SHCC standing orders, policies & procedures.
• Documenting nurse visits in Epic (EMR).
• Scheduling follow-up care with a SHCC provider(s).

Education and Counseling:

• Educates and counsels patients on their specific medical illness or injury.
• Promotes health and wellness through assessment strategies and ongoing education/counseling.
• Documents interventions in patient’s health record.

Other duties as assigned:

• Provide RN coverage for other teams and weekend clinics as needed and assigned.
• Rotates with other RNs & LPNs.
• Attend Nursing Staff meeting at SHCC.
• Participate in quality improvement programs, special projects as assigned, and continuing education.

Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm; 40 hours per week or weekdays adjusted per FTE needs. Hours and days can vary according to the SHCC’s needs. Provides Sunday coverage as assigned at Main Campus during fall and spring semesters.

The salary range is between $28.00 to $31.00 per hour and is commensurate with skills and experience.

Graduate of a nationally accredited nursing program. Licensed as a registered nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes.

• Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree.
• Two years of appropriate nursing experience
• Knowledge of providing patient care using sound nursing practice.
• Knowledge of electronic health records.
• Knowledge of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
• Skilled in-patient triage and patient assessment
• Skilled in administering intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections
• Skilled in administering oxygen
• Skilled in starting, monitoring, and administering intravenous (IV) fluids and medications
• Skilled in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Skilled in performing wound care and Point-of-Care Testing
• Ability to communicate efficiently in writing and verbally with patients, providers, nursing staff, and family members.
• Ability to take pertinent histories and document in appropriate health records.
• Ability to administer medications.
• Ability to provide treatments to patient using guidelines, policies and Standing Orders.
