  • Part time (21 hours per week), fixed term until 30th June 2026. Located at the Penrith and Parramatta GambleAware offices.

  • Base Salary $95,860 – $103,341 (HEO6) pro rata + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for an Aboriginal Community Engagement and Support Officer to work in partnership to assist and serve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people living in the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney area, impacted by gambling.

The incumbent will guide and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to engage with the GambleAware program and will assist in referrals to the service and build relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.

You will also advise and guide GambleAware clinicians and partners in providing culturally aware care and services to better support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This role will require the incumbent to attend events and travel across the GambleAware Blue Mountains Western Sydney Region and be based out of our Penrith or Parramatta offices. There may be some Saturday work as required by the Manager.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • engage, assist and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to use the GambleAware program
  • work with the GambleAware Management and team to develop referral pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to use the GambleAware program, NSW Aboriginal Safe Gambling Services and other GambleAware services in NSW
  • provide advice on the development of and deliver education and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are experiencing problem gambling, both individually and in a group setting as appropriate
  • provide advice on the development of promotional and educational materials that are culturally inclusive for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • provide advice and guidance to GambleAware clinicians on the delivery of culturally safe and inclusive care and treatment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into the GambleAware program
  • work in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations to assist in the reduction of problematic gambling of Aboriginal people with particular focus on prevention programs, early detection and access to treatment through a range of health promotion strategies.

The person who holds the position must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. It is therefore a genuine requirement under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW) (ACT) that applicants are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

About you

  • a current unrestricted NSW driver’s licence, with the ability to travel in accordance with position responsibilities
  • demonstrated understanding and experience in community engagement including an understanding of issues experienced by people and communities affected by problem gambling
  • excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated computer literacy
  • the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, team members and stakeholders and exercise tact and sound judgement
  • demonstrated understanding of compliance obligations in a health setting including regulatory, ethical, privacy and other relevant guidelines
  • experience conducting a range of community engagement activities.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
