BDAC is an ACCO (Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation) registered as a member under the umbrella of VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) and represented nationally through NACCHO (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation).

BDAC was founded to represent and provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on Djaara Country.

BDAC has a responsibility to ensure growth of services, development of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, better and improved health outcomes for our people, improved quality of life and be a lead agency in providing self-determination employment and career pathways for Aboriginal people.

About The Position

This position works collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and community to access health care services available with a specific focus upon the Dja Dja Community. Improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in the community is a key focus of BDAC’s and this position plays a pivotal role in supporting access to health care services for community experiencing chronic disease.

Key Responsibilities

Perform duties including but not limited to:

  • Establish links with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the communities within the Dja Dja Wurrung catchment to encourage and support the increased use of health services, including health checks and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identification.
  • Provide practical assistance to identified Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander people to attend appointments, specialist services, follow up care and community pharmacies.
  • Participate in relevant meetings/conferences as required, developing, and making presentations to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Maintain positive relationships with Aboriginal Hospital liaison officers across Victoria to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing services or treatment are supported during their stay.
  • Encourage and support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities to develop and understanding and knowledge on how to seek out primary health care services to improve and manage their health.
  • Effectively engage with primary health care service professionals and providers to deliver culturally appropriate and competent practice to the Aboriginal community.
  • Make contact with registered patients to the ITC program who have not engaged with the service for a period of time to check in on their wellbeing.
  • During periods of extreme weather while working with other programs at BDAC, make contact with Elders and vulnerable community members to ensure they are taking steps to remain safe where possible.

About You

  • Identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and is accepted as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person in the community he/she lives in.
  • Relevant experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community development including networking and liaison with the primary health care sector.
  • Verbal communication – can confidently convey clear messages to address the gaps in service delivery and improve access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to mainstream primary health care services.
  • Identify gaps and barriers in relation to Aboriginal health and seeks practical solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to build lasting and productive relationships with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and a range of stakeholders across the primary health care system.
  • Cooperates and works well with others in pursuit of team and organisational Closing the Gap goals and initiatives

Preferred Education, Training and/or Competencies.

  • Certificate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care
  • Experience working in Aboriginal health.
  • Experience working in the ACCO/ACCHO/AMS setting
