Academic Advisor

Counsel students on academic, career, and personal matters for the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. Advise current and prospective students regarding matriculation, registration, and goal-setting. Attend recruitment, orientation, and admissions events. Lead the New Student Seminar and provide advisement support to several programs according to the needs of the department. Respond to inquiries concerning the School, department, and program offerings. Liaise with Steinhardt Student Affairs on matters impacting student retention and timely graduation (such as leaves of absences and withdrawals).

Required Education:
Bachelor’s Degree Psychology, Counseling
Preferred Education:
Master’s Degree Higher Education/Student Affairs, Counseling, or Student Personnel Administration
Required Experience:
3+ years minimum of professional experience, including academic advisement, admissions, counseling and referrals, or related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of New York State higher education laws and policies. Excellent interpersonal, listening, public speaking, and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work both independently as well as part of a team. Ability to plan and deliver special events and seminars. Ability to learn various advising systems to track student data and outreach, input program and plan information, and develop and run reports.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Experience working within the Starfish advising platform, Tableau, and/or NYU Albert SIS are a plus (but can also be learned on the job). Experience partnering with faculty on student advising initiatives is preferred. Experience working with students in music and performing arts professions, or knowledge of the discipline in general, is preferred.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $65,000 to USD $75,000 New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
