The Academic Advisor (Transitional Advising) provides advisement and support for deposited and current students to help them onboard, transition in their first year, and overcome any challenges they may face at UM – all with the mission of providing transitional support and retention programming.

Core Job Duties: 

• Employs the University Bulletin, the Cognate Search Engine, the Academic Calendar, written course descriptions, and other appropriate sources to answer student inquiries and resolve problems related to course registration, curriculum, and course prerequisites.
• Responsible for student caseload, which includes monitoring and outreach to ensure students are completing Road to UM tasks, Road to UM modules, and fulltime course registration.
• Responsible for maintaining student’s file by documenting, scheduling, and recording all interactions.
• Responsible for providing holistic student support to students including anti-melt efforts, course registration, retention, and persistence initiatives.
• Participate in the planning, implementation, and the evaluation of the transitional advising program’s goals and objectives.
• Responsible for supporting undergraduate students as they navigate challenges for at-risk student interventions such as GPAid, not course selected, SAP risk, change of major/school, and developing/maintaining new programs as identified by the division leadership.
• Adhere to campus policies, procedures, and resources to positively impact undergraduate student success, while safeguarding University assets.
• Stay abreast of changing institutional information including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, expanding facilities, updates in college-wide initiatives.
• Familiarity with Navigate, Salesforce, PeopleSoft, Slate, and Blackboard is a plus.
• May have the option to fill the role of First Year Directions Facilitator if qualifications are met.
• Represent Transitional Advising at student events, including Admitted Student Events, Spring Involvement Fairs, Orientation, Canes Connect, Onboarding Webinars, and others.

Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in advising, counseling and/or customer service is preferred. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
• Candidate must have passion and dedication for providing students and their families with thorough, compassionate support, and the utmost care.
• Participate in the planning, implementation, and the evaluation of the academic advisement program’s goals and objectives.

• A keen ability to build relationships and connect with staff members across campus to ensure thorough, well-rounded support and solutions to students and their families.
