Primary Purpose: To provide general advising support to undergraduate students in the College of Nursing.
Nature of Work: The College of Nursing is the largest non-departmentalized college at the University of Saskatchewan and is among the most distributed across the province. This position reports to the Manager, Student Advising and Support Services.
The Academic Advisor is part of the advising team that is responsible for the provision of support and service to current and prospective students, faculty, and other staff as required. The Academic Advisor plays a role in the recruitment and retention of students by assisting students with making informed decisions concerning their education, promoting student success, identifying, and referring students at risk and/or in need of additional resources. The position is expected to demonstrate exceptional communication skills in a variety of modalities (written, verbal, virtual). It is driven by constant deadlines; continuous changes and shifting priorities. The standard for the quality of work and timely completion of tasks is high. Considerable discretion is required, as this position is privy to, and works closely with, sensitive and highly confidential information. Some travel is required.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Education: A relevant undergraduate degree. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience: A minimum of five years’ experience working in an academic environment and considerable experience working with students is required.
Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills and relationship building skills are essential to the success of this position. Experience working in a high-volume, fast paced setting and demonstrated ability working independently as well as a collaborative member of a team are also important. The incumbent must be able to handle interactions in a mature and professional manner using tact, discretion, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. The position requires the incumbent to be highly motivated and self-directed; have excellent problem analysis and problem-solving skills; demonstrate the ability to research, summarize and effectively present information; think creatively and strategically; and demonstrate capacity to manage multiple initiatives with tight timelines and competing demands.
