ROLE of the POSITION
Reporting to the Head, Special Collections and Archives Technical Services, the Accessioning and Processing Archivist is dedicated to improving access to and discovery of materials in Special Collections and Archives. This position will join a department responsible for accessioning, processing, preserving, and providing access to special collections materials in all formats, including personal papers, organizational archives, institutional records, maps, oral histories, photographs, serials, and monographs. This department works closely with the Libraries’ Digital Collections Department and Discovery Services Department to provide timely and efficient access to Special Collections and Archives’ monographs, serials, and archival materials.
This position is responsible for accessioning all incoming collections, and performing arrangement, description, and preservation of archival materials in all formats (print and born-digital). With a commitment to employing efficient archival processing methods, this position will assess collections’ processing needs and their evidential, informational, and research values to make processing recommendations, develop processing plans, and make appraisal recommendations. This position will employ nationally recognized principles, standards, and best practices to assess, plan, and propose a variety of actions to ensure the long-term accessibility and usability of the collections. This position will create collection descriptions using appropriate name and subject authorities and do research to recommend a new name or subject establishment when needed. This position may supervise student employees and/or temporary archival processing staff (as funding permits) who assist with the processing of Special Collections and Archives’ archival materials, monographs, and serials.
The Accessioning and Processing Archivist will also serve on Special Collections and Archives’ Reference Desk, this requires the incumbent to interview patrons to assess the type and extent of information required; explain and demonstrate the use of finding aids and online search portal; assist patrons in conducting research in all types of materials in Special Collections and Archives; and assist in paging activities.
As a tenure-track library faculty member, the Accessioning and Processing Archivist will be expected to work collaboratively with others; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure. The person in this position will have demonstrated ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and they will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels as well as with faculty and students.

The primary mission of the Special Collections and Archives Division is to collect, preserve, provide discovery and access to, and promote, interpret, and instruct in the use of our materials. Special Collections and Archives documents the history, culture, and physical environment of the city of Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada region, the global gaming industry, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Our collections include manuscripts, books, photographs, periodicals, maps, architectural drawings, oral history interviews, audiovisual materials, University archives, born-digital records, and other cultural artifacts. Significant collecting areas are: gaming and gambling; regional community groups and organizations; sexual entertainment and economies; Las Vegas entertainment and the arts; Las Vegas and urban resort architecture; mining and railroads; and Southern and Central Nevada history.
The division is comprised of three departments: Technical Services, Public Services, and Digital Collections. It also includes the Libraries’ preservation unit and conservation lab and the Oral History Research Center. Staff includes 8 academic faculty positions, 5 administrative faculty positions, 1 classified position, and multiple student and temporary positions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires an earned Master’s Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment.

SALARY
This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Rank II, tenure-track). Minimum salary is $66,015. Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
