Our Mission

The Spokane County Noxious Weed Control Board (SCNWCB) works to mitigate the environmental, economic, health, and social impacts of noxious weeds in Spokane County through education, partnership, landowner assistance, and enforcement of noxious weed law. SCNWCB was established in 1970 to serve the residents of Spokane County, Washington by carrying out the mandates of State Weed Law RCW 17.10, which requires landowners to control and/or eradicate regulated noxious weeds on their property.

Position Summary

The Spokane County Noxious Weed Control Board (SCNWCB) is seeking to hire an Administrative Assistant. The Administrative Assistant assists the Office Manager, Seasonal Technicians, Specialists and the Coordinator with daily duties associated with supporting a busy office.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Administrative duties include answering and directing phone calls, scheduling, calendar management, and managing incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Greet and assist the public promptly, professionally and courteously in person and over the phone.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries from the public regarding notices or general questions.
  • Provide identification material and/or direct public to another resource or staff member to assist with plant identification.
  • Data entry and maintenance, proofreading and writing letters, and notice preparation.
  • Manage daily files and incoming communication.
  • Additional Duties as assigned may include participating in board meetings, inventorying and ordering office supplies and equipment, report preparation, and managing employee timecards.

Position Schedule

This is a seasonal position based off a 40-hour work week that runs from early-April until mid-August. The work week is 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Participating in meetings, workshops, and special projects may occasionally require working outside of normal work hours. This position is not eligible for remote work.

  • Though plant identification is not a core job duty, the Administrative Assistant will undergo extensive training, provided by SCNWCB, aimed at developing proficiency in identifying common and select rare plants of Eastern Washington.
  • The SCNWCB has many recurring, planned, and ongoing outreach, education, volunteer, and social media projects which may be available for the Administrative Assistant to participate in with prior approval.
  • SCNWCB pays for all employees to obtain and maintain a Washington Public Operator’s Pesticide License. In addition, the Administrative Assistant will be given training covering commonly used herbicides, their label requirements, applications, and other information.

Qualifications

Required

  • Highschool diploma, GED or equivalent education.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn any programs required to perform job duties such as Microsoft Office, FieldMaps, ArcGIS, and customized computer programs related to Spokane County’s Noxious Weed Program.
  • Ability to obtain a Washington Public Operator’s Pesticide License within thirty (30) days of employment (training material and testing fee provided by employer).
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and other agencies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organization and ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Preferred

  • Two years of college level classes in human resources, accounting, environmental science, biology or related field(s) OR;
    • Demonstrated experience managing or assisting with office functions OR;
    • Demonstrated experience in plant identification, natural sciences, weed control, agriculture and/or a related field.
  • Other professional certifications which are applicable to the job description.
  • Familiarity with noxious weed boards/programs within or outside Washington.
  • Familiarity with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.
  • Previous experience working with the public
