Purpose / Summary
The Operational Management programme is placed under the Standards and Operations Division which supports partners in several areas of Mine Action: the standardisation of Mine Action good practices, the implementation of operations, research and innovation. Globally as well as in support of specific countries and regions, the programme assists partners in developing, promoting, and enhancing safer, effective, and efficient implementation of operations with a focus on land release and the management of residual contamination. Our goal is to support the development of tools, methods and capacities that improve operational safety and to support the dissemination of related competences through training.
The purpose of the role is to plan, implement and monitor activities within Mine Action in collaboration with other programmes and divisions, in line with the GICHD’s strategy including in significantly complex contexts by identifying and building partnerships with external parties. The Advisor will provide technical assistance including on assessments, systems/tools, trainings/workshops, research/ publications.
Key responsibilities
- Advise partners in relevant area of expertise, understanding their needs, priorities, challenges, and supporting them in developing and implementing norms, policies, procedures, tools, good practices and methodologies.
- Lead, coordinate and develop GICHD’s thematic activities working closely with other divisions’ colleagues.
- Manage activities and/or projects in the relevant thematic(s), as assigned by line manager.
- Lead and conduct assessments, workshops and provide consultation remotely and onsite.
- Design and deliver training programmes.
- Represent the GICHD, participate and proactively share expertise externally, including through the delivery of presentations and facilitation of dialogue and discussions.
- Prepare budgets and monitor financial accounts for projects assigned by line manager.
- Conduct, coordinate and disseminate research in the relevant area of expertise in the form of studies, articles and briefs.
- Actively contribute to monitoring and reporting based on the Results Based Management (RBM) system.
- Conduct and coordinate the design, implementation and maintenance of relevant systems and tools.
- If applicable, draft, review and coordinate the development of concept notes, funding/project proposals and donor reports.
Qualifications and experience
- Master’s degree in a field relevant to Explosive Ordnance Risk Reduction strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of previous relevant work experience in Mine Action.
- Demonstrated qualifications/experience in the conduct and management of land release operations.
Knowledge, skills and competencies
- Fluency in English, both written and oral; fluency in Arabic or French is an asset.
- Excellent project management, analytical, planning and organisational skills
- Ability to coordinate simultaneous activities/projects.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work in multi-cultural settings with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Knowledge of UN agencies, relevant national authorities, NGOs and humanitarian organisations.

Travel requirements
- Expected to travel up to 30% of the working time including to countries affected by explosive ordnance, with low-medium-high risk environment.
Salary Information
Please note that the salary level for this role is CHF 128’257.- yearly gross, subject to social security deductions and income tax.
