The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African- led, international research and policy institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Our researchers conduct policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa.

APHRC seeks to recruit an Advocacy Officer to work in the Strengthening Policy and Mainstreaming Gender in Sanitation Project within the Policy Engagement and Communications (PEC) Program. This is a new role arising from the implementation of the current five-year strategic plan, which has subsequently triggered tremendous growth in our programs.

Reporting to the Project Lead, the Advocacy Officer will work closely with the Policy Officer to coordinate advocacy and partner-related initiatives of the project. Externally, s/he will work closely with diverse partners (government and non-governmental, including community engagement), to advance advocacy, partner engagement and sector coordination initiatives.

Duties/Responsibilities:

● Lead the coordination work for the sector.
● Develop and implement an advocacy strategy for the project.
● Liaise with relevant internal program teams to maintain, update and actively use social media tools and sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) for regular and major initiatives of the project.
● Coordinate the advocacy and communication activities with partners, ensuring that the database of members is up to date.
● Manage the production of advocacy and communication collateral, including posters and reports.
● Keep a calendar of key global and national events, and support the coordination of participation initiatives.
● Provide capacity-strengthening sessions for stakeholders.
● Attend regular sector meetings, provide learnings and updates, and suggest areas of input in the sector initiatives.
● Work closely with the Policy officer on matters that touch on policy briefs, fact sheets, and other legal and policy outputs that require sharing internally and externally.
● Lead the production of any documentation that will be used for public engagement, visibility, and advocacy.
● Conduct monitoring and impact evaluation of advocacy activities.

Qualifications, experience, and skills:

● Bachelor’s degree in Public health, Environmental Science or related fields.
● Master’s degree in related disciplines will be an added advantage.
● At least 3-5 years of practical post-qualification work experience, working closely with governments, donors, and non-state actors in the WASH sector on advocacy and policy matters, sub-grantee management, and sector coordination will be a distinct advantage.
● Networking, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills coupled with resourcefulness, initiative and maturity of judgment.
● Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to think creatively.
