Sierra Nevada Journeys is seeking a full-time Afterschool and Summer Day Camp Manager for our Reno, NV location. The demonstrated candidate for this role will have experience managing a team and working with youth in an outdoor, camp, or informal education setting. The successful candidate will be passionate about leading and organizing powerful STEM experiences for youth and demonstrate commitment to equity, inclusion, and working with a diverse team of professionals. The Afterschool and Summer Camp Manager will work closely with the Program Director to manage the STEM Explorers Afterschool Program. They will also develop and oversee Reno’s Junior Explorers outdoor science summer day camp program.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Afterschool Program (70% during September through June; 20% during June through August)
Program Management & Instruction:
- Manage and coordinate afterschool programs at multiple local school sites. Partner schools include elementary, middle, and high schools. This includes curriculum development, coordination and communication with school and partner agency staff, between the site coordinator and Sierra Nevada Journeys, scheduling, and program evaluation.
- Teach lessons at one or more after-school program sites
- Coordinate summer instruction at 2-3 sites
Supervision:
- Collaborate with the Program Director to manage a team of up to six educators, including hiring, onboarding, training, facilitating meetings, and coaching.
- Train staff in effective and inclusive STEM and outdoor education instruction, team building and SEL facilitation, and behavior management.
- Manage afterschool instructors, including checking and approving timecards, regular check-ins, instructional coaching, and performance management
Curriculum Development:
- Create dynamic and engaging curriculum for afterschool sites, including adapting curriculum for multiple age groups, purchasing and organizing supplies, and training afterschool staff
Summer Day Camp Program (20% during September through June; 80% during June through August)
Program Management:
- Manage and coordinate day-to-day onsite operations of summer day camp (June through August)
- Main point person for all summer day camp planning and coordination, including communication with summer camp partners pre- during, and post-camp and communication with summer camp families
Supervision:
- Hire and lead the onboarding of a team of up to eight summer camp counselors
- Train staff in effective and inclusive instruction, behavior management, risk management, and summer camp procedures and protocols. Manage summer camp counselors, including checking and approving timecards, regular check-ins, instructional coaching, and performance management.
Program Development:
- Create a STEM-based summer day camp curriculum
- Develop summer camp themes, program schedules, staff schedules, and activities
Other Tasks (10%)
- Attend and facilitate staff meetings and training
- As needed, teach K-6 Sierra Nevada Journeys Classrooms Unleashed school day programs in the classroom and at field sites. Lead Family STEM Nights.
- Complete administrative and office tasks
- Cross-departmental collaboration through participation in the Education Committee and other meetings and trainings
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 2-3 years of experience managing staff
- Experience working in an informal education or youth recreation setting.
- Successful experience working with elementary-, middle- and high school-aged youth
- Demonstrated commitment to building and delivering effective, culturally relevant programs for youth from marginalized communities
- A passion for working with children and making a difference
- Willingness to attest in writing that you have up-to-date immunizations against the diseases required for public school attendance in the State of Nevada
- Current Red Cross First Aid & CPR certification or willingness to acquire within 90 days of employment date
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Next Generation Science Standards
- Familiarity with Lawrence Hall of Science BEETLES (Better Environmental Education, Teaching, Learning & Expertise Sharing) Project
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Current Wilderness First Responder Certification
