About the Opportunity

An Aged Care Advocate plays a vital role in supporting seniors by providing them with the necessary knowledge and confidence to defend their rights. They can either guide them to self-advocate or act as their voice. The Advocate’s responsibilities include providing individual advocacy support to elderly people and their representatives, as well as facilitating information and education sessions for residents and employees of residential aged care facilities, carers, health care professionals and other community organisations.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a team committed to raising awareness and empowering older people to activate, uphold, extend, and defend their individual rights.

As an Aged Care Advocate, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Listening and advocating on behalf of older people receiving or seeking to receive residential aged care services.
  • Helping older people and their representatives make informed decisions.
  • Assisting clients making complaints against aged care service providers and having their concerns addressed.
  • Participating in the maintenance and development of local networks and relationships to promote Seniors Rights Service and expand its reach.

Your regular work includes:

  • Managing intake and advocacy cases using our Salesforce database – includes regular rostering on live calls.
  • Referring clients to other services including the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
  • Getting out and providing education and information sessions to aged care recipients and aged care employees – using your own registered and comprehensively insured vehicle.
  • Contributing to promotional campaigns targeting marginalised individuals and groups.

About you

As an Aged Care Advocate, you will have:

  • A passion for social justice and making a difference to the world.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (in Social Sciences or Community Services) or relevant experience.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to explain complex information concisely to a diverse range of people.
  • Ability to work both in a team and independently including the ability to prioritise your own work to deliver results.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office 365.
  • A high level of resilience, empathy, and a can-do attitude.
  • Some intrastate travel may be required.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the NSW aged care system.
  • Experience in delivering workshops and presentations.
