With operations in key regions such as Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Anbar, Nineveh, Diyala, and Basra, AGO focuses on rebuilding lives and promoting inclusivity for all, including minorities and persons with disabilities.
Background
Al Qurna District in Basra has significant agricultural potential, characterized by its fertile land and diverse climate. However, agricultural productivity remains constrained due to various challenges, including limited access to modern agricultural practices, inadequate irrigation infrastructure, and post-conflict recovery issues. This ToR outlines the role and responsibilities of an Agriculture Expert who will support local farmers, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and contribute to the district’s food security and economic development.
Objectives
The primary objective of this consultancy is to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability in Al Qurna through capacity building, technical assistance, and the promotion of best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Assessment and Analysis:
- Conduct a thorough assessment of the current agricultural practices in Al Qurna, identifying key challenges and opportunities.
- Analyze soil health, water resources, and crop selection to determine the most viable agricultural practices for the region.
- Design and implement training programs for local farmers on sustainable agricultural practices, pest management, crop rotation, and irrigation techniques.
- Facilitate workshops and field demonstrations to enhance knowledge and skills among farmers.
- Provide ongoing support and advice to farmers in crop management, livestock care, and resource utilization.
- Assist in the implementation of modern agricultural technologies and practices that are suitable for the local context.
- Collaborate with local agricultural cooperatives, community organizations, and government entities to promote agricultural initiatives.
- Engage with community leaders to foster support for agricultural development projects.
- Stay updated on the latest agricultural research and trends relevant to the region.
- Pilot innovative agricultural practices and technologies, collecting data to evaluate their effectiveness.
- Develop indicators to assess the impact of agricultural interventions on productivity and livelihoods.
- Prepare regular reports on progress, challenges, and recommendations for future actions.
Deliverables
- Comprehensive assessment report detailing the agricultural landscape of Al Qurna District, including recommendations for intervention.
- Training materials and documentation of training sessions conducted with local farmers.
- Periodic progress reports summarizing activities undertaken, outcomes achieved, and lessons learned.
- Final report evaluating the overall impact of the consultancy on agricultural practices and community resilience.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, or related fields.
- Minimum [X years] of experience in agricultural development, preferably in post-conflict or rural settings.
- Proven expertise in sustainable farming practices, crop management, and community engagement.
- Strong understanding of the local agricultural context in Iraq is highly desirable.
