Background and Overview

Humanitarian Initiative Just Relief Aid (HIJRA) is a humanitarian and development organization that aims to positively contribute to improving the living standards of vulnerable communities. Our work involves the reconstruction of community livelihoods, improvement of community resilience in the face of climatic and human shocks through improved food security, and increased access to water sanitation and hygiene Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning.

HIJRA is currently implementing the Building Resilient Communities in Somalia (BRCiS) Project in Afgooye and Wanlaweyn districts in lower Shabelle, Somalia, targeting communities through Inclusive local Leadership, Ecosystem Restoration and Climate Adaptation, Food and Nutritional Security, Financial Inclusion and Market Linkages, and Community level Early Warning Early Action (EWEA) systems. The project activities are focused on meeting community needs and priorities identified by the community resilience committees (CRCs), documented in Community Action Plans (CAPs) and consolidated in Area Action Plans (AAPs) in a process that facilitates resilience and development through improved social accountability.

Position: Agronomist

Duty Station: Afgooye/Wanlaweyn

Contract period: 9 Months with possibility of Extension

The Role: We are seeking a passionate and skilled Agronomist to join our team and play a pivotal role in establishing and strengthening community-based water and natural resource management, engage the communities in ecosystem restoration and protection initiatives promote sustainable waste management practices, introduce regenerative rangeland management practices, establish/rehabilitate resilient multi water use systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Ecosystem Restoration and Climate Change Restoration

  • Create community awareness on ecosystem restoration and integrated water use management
  • Conduct initial and annual refresher training on ecosystem restoration and integrated water resource management in collaboration with the project team.
  • Establish and conduct training Early Warning, Early Action (EWEA) sub-committees on adjusted system
  • Lead the data collection process on Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) assessment and reporting on soil and land health.
  • Guide the CRCs in developing shock contingency plans
  • Conduct harmonized market system and resilience assessment.
  • Establish/strengthen water system management structure
  • Engage watershed users in ecosystem restoration and protection activities
  • Implement regenerative range land management practices.
  • Train communities on the management of livestock fodder stocks (including storage facilities)
  • Collaborate with the field teams in creating awareness and training Community Resilience Committees (CRC) on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) ensuring Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), and mechanisms of reporting complaints and feedback

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Collaborate with the MEAL team, field officers and CRCs in collecting and analyzing data and reporting the progress of ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation, food and nutrition security project activities identifying implementation challenges, lessons learned and best practices.

Community Engagement

  • Coordinate with CRCs, local authorities, community leaders, and NGOs and other stakeholders to create participation, visibility and ownership ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation, food and nutrition activities.
  • Maintain active membership and participation in Early recovery and livelihoods as well as Food Security and Nutrition Clusters.

Education Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience working in humanitarian or development projects implementing sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, or related activities
  • Knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices and ecosystem restoration techniques
  • Proficient computer applications, data collection, analysis and relevant software and tools for agricultural planning and analysis
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in English and Somali Language(s)
  • Ability to work in challenging and dynamic environments.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with project staff and community members (CRCs).
  • Respect for cultural diversity, gender and humanitarian principles and values.
  • Strong capability of networking, coordinating and collaborating with various partners including Government departments.
