Position description

This position provides research and programmatic support for the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy (AGS), including AGS participation in the America in the World Consortium (AWC). Primary supervision will be via the Associate Director of the Program in American Grand Strategy.

 

The Program in American Grand Strategy seeks to create the next generation of strategic leaders through interactive learning opportunities including interaction with current and former policymakers, crisis simulations, field trips and staff rides, and coursework. As part of this mission, AGS is part of a consortium of schools with similar initiatives dedicated to grand strategy and national security, the America in the World Consortium. This position supports AGS, as well as AWC at Duke, in advancing its research and programmatic missions.

 

WORK PERFORMED

 

RESEARCH

  • Conduct independent research and support ongoing research projects of the program and its affiliates, including faculty, staff, postdoctoral and predoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
  • Work with Director and Associate Director to develop strategies to disseminate research findings of program affiliates.
  • Under guidance of Director and Associate Director, develop and coordinate opportunities for undergraduate research activities, including identifying opportunities, advertising to potential candidates, and advertising ongoing research work being done through this program.

 

PROGRAMMATIC

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for AGS programming, including field trips, staff rides, and speaker series events.
  • Work with Director, Associate Director, AGS alumni coordinator(s), and current students to help develop the program’s alumni network and activities.
  • Work with Director and Associate Director to develop special projects to advance the AGS mission and invest in developing and enriching the student experience within AGS.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications

In addition the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes:

  • Demonstrated interest in and understanding of US foreign policy and military affairs.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility in work hours to support evening events and programming as well as occasional weekends.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to interact well with undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, visiting dignitaries, and prospective donors.
  • Ability to work successfully with partners locally and remotely.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree program.

 

Experience

 

None required beyond education.
