With staff across six continents and hubs in Washington, D.C., Amsterdam, and Sarajevo, OCCRP is one of the largest investigative journalism organizations in the world. We are a nonprofit, mission-driven newsroom that partners with other media outlets to publish stories that spur action. OCCRP is also a media development platform that advances investigative reporting worldwide.
Our mission is to spread and strengthen investigative journalism around the world and expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. Our work has three main pillars: We collaborate with investigative journalists to publish hard-hitting stories that spark change; we provide training, tools, and infrastructure so nonprofit media outlets can thrive; and we develop technology and innovations that advance the entire industry.
Position Overview
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Community Manager to foster and support OCCRP’s global Aleph user and developer community. This role is key in shaping Aleph’s user experience, overseeing access management, community engagement, and training efforts, ensuring Aleph continues to be an invaluable tool for investigative journalists worldwide.
The ideal candidate will excel at relationship-building and open-source community engagement, with a strong focus on user experience and support. You’ll work closely with OCCRP’s product and editorial teams, as well as with Aleph’s developer community, to grow a supportive, collaborative environment. Your efforts will ensure Aleph remains accessible, secure, and continuously improving for all who rely on it.
Job Description
We’re seeking a proactive and community-driven Aleph Community Manager with a passion for building and nurturing engaged user networks. This role requires a collaborative spirit, a deep understanding of open-source communities, and the ability to create meaningful connections with users and developers, aligning community engagement efforts with OCCRP’s mission of impactful investigative journalism.
User Access Management:
Manage and oversee access requests for OCCRP’s Aleph instance, ensuring adherence to access policies and permissions for non-staff users.
Collaborate with OCCRP network members to validate access requests, ensuring that only legitimate, mission-aligned users gain access.
Build and maintain relationships with journalistic users, facilitating meaningful connections with OCCRP’s editorial team when relevant.
Open Source Community Engagement:
Serve as the primary point of contact for the Aleph developer Slack channel and Aleph Discourse community, sharing updates, responding to questions, and addressing issues.
Track and engage with organizations using Aleph, fostering a network of active users and contributors.
Regularly post updates and news on the Aleph Twitter account and organize developer meetings, hackathons, and other community events to encourage participation and collaboration.
Report monthly on community outreach efforts, tracking engagement metrics and community feedback.
Training Coordination:
Support OCCRP’s data journalists and Data Desk in developing and maintaining a comprehensive training program, including webinars, workshops, and user guides.
Create and manage a certification system for training attendees, enabling users to demonstrate their proficiency with Aleph.
Schedule and promote public Aleph training sessions, ensuring users and developers are informed and prepared to participate.
Report monthly on training initiatives, tracking the effectiveness of programs and user engagement.
Person Description
You are a relationship builder and community advocate with a passion for supporting investigative journalism in a mission-driven setting. You thrive in open-source environments and have a knack for creating positive, engaging experiences for both technical and non-technical users. Your strong communication skills are complemented by your ability to manage user access and foster collaborative communities. You are a proactive problem solver, always looking for ways to enhance user experience, build connections, and improve Aleph’s reach and impact.
