Job Summary Dalhousie University’s Psychology and Neuroscience Department is the top Psychology and Neuroscience Department in Atlantic Canada. The department is one-of-a-kind and was established for research into what makes humans and animals behave the way that they do, as well as to understand the structure and function of the nervous system. Reporting to the Department Administrator, the Animal Care Technician is responsible for the daily care of a variety of laboratory animals as well as the general cleanliness and sanitation of animal rooms and equipment. It also involves some receiving, assisting in the cage wash area and other related duties.
Key Responsibilities
  • Daily cleaning of animal housing rooms, including changing animal cages/water bottles/feeding bowls and delivering dirty materials to cage wash area.
  • Regularly changing cage racks and delivering to cage wash area; clean and sanitize animal room floors, sinks, shelves.
  • Ensure that animals have an adequate supply of food and water according to the researcher’s criteria. Monitoring light cycles, temperature, humidity as necessary.
  • Perform daily health assessment on animals, isolating sick animals and referring to the Animal Care Supervisor or veterinarian, as needed.
  • Provide treatments for sick and injured animals.
  • Assist the Animal Care Supervisor in training new personnel and providing back up to this role when necessary.
Note Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus. 
This position is considered part of the University’s essential services, so there is a requirement for occasional work on weekends and holidays, on a rotational basis.
Required Qualifications
  • A professional tech diploma such as veterinary tech or equivalent, or a bachelor’s degree in an animal-related field, with a minimum of three years’ related work experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Must be CALAS eligible, or a currently registered tech under CALAS, ARLAT or equivalent.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, along with sound judgment and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and tact when dealing with confidential information.
