About Us
The Research and Innovation Office manages research administration at Murdoch University and encompasses areas such as grants and contracts, ethics, research integrity and commercialisation. The office works with researchers throughout the journey, ensuring people work in a safe environment underpinned by an ethical framework.
The Role
The Animal Ethics Advisor supervises the ethical dimensions of research and teaching involving animals. The role encompasses advocating for ethical practices, providing guidance to applicants regarding compliance with the Australian Code for the care and use of animals for Scientific purposes and ensuring University compliance with legislative requirements governing the use of animals in teaching and research.
Further key responsibilities include:
- Provide support on animal ethics for all teaching and research requiring animal ethics approval,
- Promote the role and value of animal ethics in relation to teaching and research,
- Attend Animal Ethics committee meetings in an advisory capacity and assist with administrative activities,
- Assess the impact, and inform the Murdoch University teaching and research community of relevant animal ethics related legislation and regulatory changes; making policy recommendations and implement programs on the subject,
- Recruit AEC members as required and provide induction to new AEC members,
- Respond to complaints and recommend actions when adverse events impacting animal welfare occur,
- Maintain compliance regarding the Scientific use of animals in each of the states and territories in which the University is licensed.
What you’ll bring to this role
- Postgraduate qualifications in veterinary or biological sciences or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience,
- Substantial specialist and technical knowledge and expertise relating to animal and welfare and ethics, and the use of animals in research and teaching in the laboratory and field,
- Strong corporate management skills, including excellent written and verbal communication skills; with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters,
- Experience in the development and delivery of training and information sessions,
- Demonstrated ability to build and sustain collaborative partnerships,
- Professional experience in research, academic, medical, scientific, or technical environment,
- Experience providing compliance and/or quality management services in a highly regulated environment; with the ability to understand and provide advice on compliance with legislation, regulations, and/or codes.
